SCOTTISH GOLF UNION PRESS RELEASE

EUROPEAN STARS LINE UP FOR TEAM
CHAMPIONSHIP AT WESTERN GAILES

Euro stars are set to shine this week on the stunning links golf course at Western Gailes Golf Club, proud hosts of the 25th European men's amateur team championship.
With 20 teams from across the Continent set to embark on their Euro campaign, which gets underway today, action looks set to be hot on the picturesque Ayrshire course, even if the temperatures don’t match the sizzling form.
Scotland boasts a strong line-up with US amateur champion Richie Ramsay and Irish open amateur stroke-play champion Lloyd Saltman heading the team. Saltman and Glasgow's Jonathan King competed in the last European team championship when it was hosted at Hillside Golf Club, Lancashire in 2005.
Bancory boy wonder James Byrne offers fresh young talent in the mix, and with proven winners Kevin McAlpine and Keir McNicoll completing the six-strong squad, the Scots will start among the favourites.
With leading golfing nations providing a strong overseas challenge, teams will have to ensure their game is on par to progress from the two stroke play qualifying rounds to a much sought after place in the upper flight of the match-play stages. The climax to the tournament is the final on Saturday.
Commenting on the tournament, SGU CEO Hamish Grey said: “The European amateur team championship always provides a very strong field with some of the world’s best amateur golfers keen to demonstrate their prowess. Looking at the calibre of previous competitors in this event from Colin Montgomerie, Jose Maria Olazabal to Sergio Garcia gives you some indication of what a great tournament this will be.
“This is one of the biggest events we have staged and with many Walker Cup squad members including former world No 1 Jamie Moul and Norway’s star Marius Thorpe – winner of the silver medal at The Open last year. This is a great opportunity to watch the future stars of European golf.”
The SGU have commended the work of the Westerg Gailes Golf Club greenkeepers keeping the course in excellent condition for the week ahead.
