European men's amateur team championship at Western Gailes
KEVIN McALPINE LEADS THE WAY FOR SCOTLAND
WITH A 68 BUT LLOYD SALTMAN HAS A 74
Double Scottish champion Kevin McAlpine (Alyth) has given Scotland a boost in the first of the two stroke-play qualifying rounds of the European men's amateur team championship at Western Gailes Golf Club, Ayrshire.
Kevin has shot a three-under-par 68 (34-34), which helps to counter-balance a disappointing 74 from Lloyd Saltman (39-35).
Jonathan King (Glasgow) has weighed in with a 70 (36-34) but Keir McNicoll (Carnoustie) could do no better than a 77 (38-39).
Still out on the course with the time coming up to 5pm were James Byrne (Banchory) and Richie Ramsay (Royal Aberdeen).
Each team drops its worst score on the day to gave a first-round team total. At the end of 36 holes (second round on Wednesday), the eight teams with the lowest aggregates make up the championship flight for match-play.
