MASON WINS STOP-START-STOP
CHALLENGE EVENT IN MADRID
Englishman Ben Mason won the latest European Challenge Tour event, the weather-disrupted Open Mahou de Madrid at Casino Club de Golf Retamares.
Torrential rain, thunderstorms, flooding and thick fog - you name it and they had it in Madrid. No surprise that the tournament was eventually reduced to 54 holes. The surprise is that they managed even to complete as many as three rounds so bad was the weather and the effect it had on the Madrid course.
Mason birdied the 17th in his final round of 69 and that was to prove decisive. It gave him a total of eight-under-par 205 for the 6,575yd, par-71 course. His earlier rounds were 70 and 66.
He won by one shot from compatriot Tim Milford and Spaniard Alvaro Velasco.
Peter Whiteford and Jamie McLeary tied for 23rd place on 211. Whitefored scored 71, 65 and 75, McLeary 70, 67 and 74.
Carnoustie's Eric Ramsay had a disastrous third round of 78 (38-40) cluded a double bogey 6 at the fouorth and a double bogey 7 at the long 10th. His earlier rounds gave no hint that things would go wrong - 68 and 70. He tied for 56th place on three-over 216.
West Linton-based Welshman Gareth Wright and Aberdonian Scott Henderson failed to beat the cut. Wright had 67 and 77 for 144 while Henderson was out of sorts with an 81 and 77 for 158.
