EMPHATIC WIN FOR BRAEHEAD OVER TILLICOULTRY IN CLACKMANNAN FOURSOMES
By HUGH HUNTER
The 2007 Clackmannan county club foursomes tournament ended with an emphatic win for Braehead Golf Club over Tillicoultry Golf Club at the rain-soaked Tulliallan course this evening.
The tournament uses a traditional scoring system whereby three couples play against each other over 18 holes, the result is decided by the aggregate of holes up and down. Braehead’s top couple of team captain Ross Benvie, partnered by Scott McChristie, quickly established a two-hole lead by the seventh. Although pulled back to a single hole by the 11th, the duo struck back with wins at 12 and 13, eventually finishing four holes up.
Although Tillicoultry made a slight rally in the last two games at the 11th and 12th holes, the result became clear well before the end and Braehead finished 16 holes up.
Their path to the final started with a shock win against the holders, Tulliallian over their home course, followed by a semi-final win against Alloa by seven holes.
Tillicoultry’s route to the final involved only a semi-final win against Dollar (who had beaten Alva in the first round) by 11 holes. Interestingly, the semi-final match found two former Wee County Scottish boy champions on opposite sides -- John Gullen for Tillicoultry and Bobby Watson for Dollar.
