FIFTH IN ROEHAMPTON

GOLD CUP

Scot Cathy Panton-Lewis, pictured right, finished joint fifth in the Roehampton Gold Cup 36-hole women's open tournament, one of the few on the golfing calendar which is open to both amateurs and professionals at the London course.

Cathy, retired from Ladies European Tour a number of years but still a spasmodic competitor on the United States Legends Tour, had rounds of 80 and 73 for a total of 153. Her 73 was the second-best score in the second round.

Professional Kirsty Taylor and Kent county amateur team player Claire Aitken tied on level par 144 to share the handsome gold trophy, six strokes ahead of the field of 60. Claire looked to have one hand on the cup when she shot a 69 in the first round while Kristy had a 75 but the scores were reversed in the second round.
Kirsty Taylor (Kirsty Speake that was), from Clitheroe, Lancashire, turned professional as along ago as 1995. She won the Roehampton Gold Cup for the first time in 1999. Newly moved south to Gloucesterhsie and attached to Minchinhampton Gold Club, Kirsty is looking forward to another year on the Ladies’ European Tour.
Claire Aitken, aged 21 with a handicap of +1, plays out of The London Club in Kent. She is quite clearly on a roll because she went into the Roehampton Gold Cup with confidence sky high following her capture of the Hampshire Rose.
Claire was also runner-up in the recent Kent women’s county championship, which she won in 2006. She will be hard to beat playing for Kent in the forthcoming county week at Littlestone.
