US GIRLS' OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP

SOLID START BY SALLY WATSON

South Queensferry 15-year-old Sally Watson had a par 72 in the first qualifying round of the United States girls' open golf championship Carmel Country Club, Charlotte in North Carolina on Monday.
She was lying joint 11th in a field of 156 behind American Joanne Lee, 17, who shot a 69.
The leading 64 after a second qualifying round will go forward to the match-play stages over a 6,396yd course with the tough rough which always prevails at USGA championships of whatever level.
Sally decided to play in the event instead of defending the Scottish Under-18 girls' title at Peebles this week.
