ABERDEEN PENNANT FINAL

BRYAN BREAKS HOLIDAY TO HELP

MURCAR LINKS WIN PENNANT

Holiday-breaker Bryan Innes tonight helped Murcar Links Golf Club regain the Ritson Smith Aberdeen Pennant League championship they last won three years ago.

It was 10.45pm when the last of the six ties finished in darkness, giving Murcar Links a 4-2 scoreline over Nigg Bay.

The fact that the highest handicap of any player in the 12-man Murcar Links team was one reflected the strength of their line-up. International player Bryan Innes responded to the call from his club to play – even though he is meantime on a family holiday at Crail.

He left on the return trip to Fife as soon as he and Terry Mathieson, who also plays off +1, had won the top tie in the four-ball, better-ball format by 3 and 1 over Paul Burnett and Jason Annand.

Wins by Billy Main and George Paterson (3 and 2) and Ian Powell and Neil Sadler (7 and 5) extended the Murcar lead to 3-0  but there was still a glimmer of hope for Nigg Bay with the three remaining ties still in the balance out on the course.

After Gary Stewart and Richard Neilson (one hole) had opened Nigg Bay’s account, Sandy Phillips and Barry Mitchell (3 and 2) scored Murcar Links’ four win to clinch overall victory.

Although the result could not affect the outcome, there was pride at stake in the last tie which was played out to the bitter end in darkness. Gordon Grimmer and Robert Bothwell won it by one hole for Nigg Bay over Anthony Bews and Ally Fiddes.
