Strong field assembled for the English Girls’ Championship

Leading girl golfers from twelve different countries will head for Gog Magog Golf Club in Cambridgeshire next week to play in the English Girls’ Open Championship.

The 72-hole stroke play event is played over three days, starting on Tuesday, 30 July, with the full field playing 18 holes on each of the first two days before the leading 40 competitors, and those tied for 40th place, will play a further 36 holes on the third day.
Last year, for the first time, the championship was won by an overseas winner with 17-year-old German, Celina Sattelkau finishing three shots ahead of Australia’s Kirsten Rudgeley and six in front of Italy’s Maria Corbi at East Devon Golf Club. Rudgeley, from the Mount Lawley Golf Club returns this year together with Trinity Francis from Huntingdale.
The leading English player 12 months ago was girl international Mimi Rhodes, from Burhan and Berrow in Somerset who finished fourth and she returns again as part of a strong home challenge also including fellow England Girls’ squad members Jessica Baker (Gosforth Park and Northumberland), Rafiah Banday (Royal Mid-Surrey and Middlesex), Rosie Belsham (Whitley Bay and Northumberland), Ellie Gower (Chateau ds Vigiers), Charlotte Heath (Huddersfield and Yorkshire), Daisy Kennedy (Stoke Park and Buckinghamshire), Thalia Kirby (Stoke Park and Buckinghamshire) and Caitlin Whitehead (Carus Green and Cumbria). Rhodes, Whitehead, Baker, Belsham and Heath all represented England in the recent European Girls’ Team Championship in Spain.
The largest overseas contingent comes from Germany while one of the Scottish players involved is Eilidh Henderson, from the Loretto School Golf Club, who lost to Katy Alexander, a member of the host club, in the recent Scottish Girls’ Match Play Championship at Blairgowrie. Semi-finalist Rachel Foster, from Prestwick St Nicholas, also heads south to play.
Lucy Pepper represents the host club.
