Day 5 Report: Scottish Boys’ Amateur Championship

RUBEN LINDSAY FROM AYR WINS SCOTTISH BOYS' TITLE

Ruben Lindsay of Ayr Belleisle was crowned Scottish Boys Amateur Champion in tense fashion with a one-hole win over Longniddry’s Cameron Gallagher in the final over the Lansdowne Course at Blairgowrie today.
In a match where there was never more than one hole in it, there was some fantastic golf played with nine birdies and an eagle.    After 16 holes of the Final, the match was poised at all square with both players having been up at points in the match.
Lindsay took the advantage with a birdie on the 16th before Gallagher replied by winning the 17th to level the match once again.
With the title on the line going down 18, Lindsay secured a solid par that could not be matched by Gallagher ,ensuring the Ayr Belleisle member was crowned this year’s winner.
Speaking to Scottish Golf after his match, a delighted Lindsay said, “I’m glad all of the hard graft has finally paid off, it feels really good to get the win.  “I knew I could make birdies and my game was good enough, all I had to do was focus on each shot at a time and stay patient.”
On playing against Gallagher who had been his team-mate at the European Boys’ Team Championship last week, Lindsay added, “It was definitely different, Cameron was my foursomes’ partner one week and my opponent the next.  We are both good mates, I was glad to get on the winner’s side of that one.”
In the morning’s semi-finals, Lindsay had fought back from two-down with two to play as he defeated Muckhart’s Andrew Thornton on the second extra hole. Lindsay birdied both play-off holes as he progressed to the final.
In the other morning match, Gallagher was a 5 and 4 victor against Newmachar’s Evan Orr. After a tight start to the match, Gallagher stood on the eighth tee one up before four birdies in five holes saw him extend his lead and close out the match with a par on the 14th.
