Humphreys marches ahead at Irish Women’s Open

Lily-May Humphreys (England) may well repeat the feat achieved by Hannah McCook in 2018 when the Scot  won the Welsh and Irish Women’s Open Stroke Play titles in consecutive weeks.

 

The 17-year-old from Essex represented GB and I at the 2018 Curtis Cup, played for GB at the Youth Olympics last year and is a past British Girls’ Amateur Champion – to name but a few achievements she has notched in her young career to date.

 

Opening with six birdies in her first nine holes, Humphreys strode comfortably into the back nine unphased, ultimately posting a 7-under-par 67.

 

“On the front nine I only two-putted twice and the rest were one putts, although I wanted to try and get lower once I got to 6-under through nine.”

 

A comparatively average second nine of 35 (one under) followed where Humphrey’s admitted that the putts, which had dropped so easily in previous holes, dried up.

 

“I horse-shoed on ten from eleven feet or so but birdied the next. On the back nine I had two three-putts and three-putted the last for par which was disappointing but I struck it well and didn’t really make many mistakes massively – I just kept it in play, hit the greens, it was just pretty simple. I was just trying to play steady and give myself the opportunities still.”

 

The Irish Women’s Open Stroke Play Championship at Co. Louth has honoured two legends of the game in Clarrie Reddan and Philomena Garvey. Reddan and Garvey dominated during their amateur careers, and although there was no Open Stroke Play at the time, they boast 16 Irish Close Championships and 8 GB andI Curtis Cup team appearances between them. The competitors today compete for a trophy in their name.

 

Humphreys will begin her second round tomorrow at 10:20am with a four- shot lead from Eilidh Briggs, Hazel MacGarvie and Chloe Goadby – all from Scotland – who posted rounds of three-under.

 

Paula Grant (Lisburn) leads from an Irish perspective after her round of 73, while Leah Temple-Lang (Elm Park) is one shot further back on level par.
