Faldo Series to enhance offering of Irish District girls' championships

In a new venture this year the ILGU District Girls’ Championships will be run in conjunction with the world renowned Faldo Series.

Now in its 23rd year, the Series proves its global reach by kicking off with the Faldo Series Middle East Championship, at Al Ain Equestrian Shooting and Golf Club in Abu Dhabi. This event is followed by a whirlwind five months for the Series with events taking place around Europe and the rest of the world, highlighted by eight regional qualifiers around the UK and Ireland and the Faldo Series South America Championship in Brazil in June.

The Faldo Series Europe fittingly concludes at Al Ain for its Grand Final in November, where some of the world’s best juniors will go head-to-head for one of the biggest crowns in Junior Golf.

The ILGU Districts run open championships for girls which are steeped in history, the oldest of the five being the Connacht Girls’ Open which was won by Maeve Lawler in 1973. However in recent years, with the national and international amateur golf calendars becoming saturated with events, participation in District Girls’ Championships has dwindled.

To combat this, the ILGU and The Faldo Series have joined together and each District Championship will now count towards an Order of Merit – the top four players from which will be selected to attend the Faldo Series Grand Final. The Faldo Series Order of Merit will be decided by players using their best four performances from the five District events.

ILGU High Performance Manager David Kearney said: “We hope that this venture will encourage players to support our girls’ events and gain a place at the Faldo Series Grand Final and benefit from the associated experience of such a prestigious international event.”
Sir Nick Faldo, founder of the Faldo Series, commented: “I’m so proud of the Faldo Series and how far it’s come. We set out to try and find tomorrow’s champions, and to help them improve by competing against contemporaries from other countries. We’ve done a great job in that regard, with numerous US PGA Tour, European Tour, Ladies European Tour and Major winners coming from Faldo Series players already.

“Beyond that, we look to try and leave a positive mark on the wider game. Taking events to countries like Slovakia, Brazil and the UAE is a conscious effort to try and help along potentially elite players from these countries to compete, but also to raise awareness of the game of golf.”
The events included in the collaboration are:
The Munster Girls Open Championship in association with The Faldo Series: April 16-18, Castletroy GC
The Ulster Girls’ Open Championship in association with The Faldo Series: April 23-25, Warrenpoint GC
The Connacht Girls’ Open Championship in association with The Faldo Series: June 27-28, Westport GC
The Leinster Girls’ Open Championship in association with The Faldo Series:  July 2-4, Laytown and Bettystown GC
