DUKE UNIVERSITY NEWS RELEASE

HILTON HEAD, South Carolina
– The Darius Rucker Intercollegiate concluded Sunday afternoon with the Duke University tandem of Jaravee Boonchant and Gina Kim in the top five of the individual leaderboard. Boonchant turned in a fourth place finish, while Kim was tied for fifth at the 6,160-yard, Par 71 Pete Dye Course at the Long Cover Club in Hilton Head, S.C.
Boonchant, who hails from Bangkok, Thailand, carded a bogey-free, 70, in the final round to turn in a season-best fourth place ledger with a one-under, 212. The sophomore rolled in a five-foot birdie putt on the 374-yard, par four 14th for her lone birdie Sunday, while hitting 16 greens, 13 fairways and rolling 33 putts. She collected a key sand save for par on No. 17 to preserve her bogey-free round. Boonchant played her final 29 holes of the tournament without a bogey and finished with 45 pars over the three days, which ranked third.
So far in 2018-19, Boonchant has finished no lower than tied for 24th and registered her fourth top 10 placements out of six tournaments.
After entering Sunday with a four-under-par score, Kim signed for a 74 in the final round to place tied fifth with a career-best even-par, 213. Kim, who is from Chapel Hill, N.C., opened the day with back-to-back bogeys, but then went birdie, bogey and birdie over the next three holes. She drained a 12-footer for birdie on No. 3 and a five-footer for birdie on No. 5. Kim played the final 13 holes at two-over with 11 pars and two bogeys.
Over the last three tournaments, Kim has placed no lower than 11th including two top five finishes.
After moving into second place in the team standings after 36 holes, Duke fell to fourth overall with a 17-over-par, 869. The Blue Devils shot 12-over, 296, in the final round. Florida State won the team title with a two-under, 850, while South Carolina (867), Wake Forest (867), Duke (869), Auburn (882), Vanderbilt (882), Arkansas (886), Furman (887), UCLA (887) and Virginia (888) rounded out the top 10 teams.
“It wasn’t a good final day for us,” said Duke head coach Dan Brooks. “Our sicknesses and injury played a role but it certainly wasn’t everything. I saw several costly mistakes today that had nothing to do with health issues. We’ll be better next time.”
Florida State’s Frida Kinhult won the individual title with a nine-under, 204.
Senior Virginia Elena Carta placed in the top 30 for the fourth time in 2018-19 as she carded rounds of 73, 72 and 76 for an eight-over, 221. She couldn’t get the birdie putts to drop in the final round finishing with 35 putts on the day, while hitting 11 greens and 11 fairways. Carta, who is from Udine, Italy, collected Duke’s lone birdie on the 172-yard, par three 17th.
Dealing with the flu all week, junior Ana Belac worked her way to a 10-over, 223, as she placed tied 36th. She notched two birdies over her final six holes on No. 13 and No. 16, while hitting 11 greens, 10 fairways and totaling 33 putts. She finished the final round with a five-over, 76.
Sophomore Miranda Wang had the best start of the Blue Devils Sunday with birdies on No. 3 and No. 6. Wang, who is from Beijing, China, was two-under-par through 10 holes, but closed with two double-bogeys and a triple-bogey over her final eight holes to finish with a 76. She hit nine fairways, 12 greens and had 30 putts. Wang also netted 5-of-6 up-and-downs, while finishing the weekend tied for 56th with a 228.
The Blue Devils finished the weekend with 30 birdies and led the field with a 4.91 stroke average on the par fives.
Duke will next compete in the Evans Derby Experience March 23-25 in Auburn, Ala.
