Craig Ross shares EuroPro Tour lead three clear of field

Craig Ross and Josh Hilleard head into the final round of the HotelPlanner.com PGA EuroPro Tour’s Clipper Logistics Championship as joint leaders and three clear of the remainder of the field with second rounds of 64 (-7) and 65 (-6) respectively, at Moor Allerton Golf Club.

Ross (Kirkhill Golf Club), pictured, was the first of the leading duo in the clubhouse, carding the joint lowest round of the tournament on day two, picking up just a single bogey and eight birdies en route to a superb overall score of 10-under par.

A winner at Mar Hall as an amateur in 2014, Ross is yet to taste victory on the EuroPro Tour as a professional but said confidence will be high heading into the final round. “I played really solid today, I hit a couple really close early on which gave me a lot of confidence heading into the rest of my round.”

It wasn’t plain sailing for Ross who opened his round with a bogey on the 10th. He said: “I picked the wrong club on the tee today, I went for driver when I should have gone for something less. I’d just started so I knew there was a long way to go and didn’t let that hole affect me.”

He added: “A win this week would me a lot to me, it would get me that bit further up the Order of Merit and with a great chance to get into the top five for the Challenge Tour spots for the 2019 season.”

Hilleard (Farrington Park) secured his place at the top of the pack with Ross in stunning style, grabbing a crucial eagle on the 18th, a superb response to the back-to-back bogeys his picked up on the 15th and 16th holes.

A rookie on the EuroPro Tour, Hilleard has had reasonable success on the Tour since turning pro, making the cuts at all three of his previous events in 2018 including a top 10 finish at Montrose Golf Links.

Reflecting on his performance he said: “I played really nice today, I’ve struggled a bit before this week so I’m pleased to see things coming together quicker than I’d have expected. I’ve worked really hard back home with coaches to get my game to this level; my iron play was as good as it could get today.

He added: “I had four wins in 22 days as an amateur in 2016, so I’m going to have to try and remember what that success felt like heading into tomorrow. You’re not going to be at the top of the leaderboard every week so it’s important that I make the most of the opportunity tomorrow.”

Three golfers in the form of Jimmy Mullen, Daniel Gavins, and Mark Young sit three shots back and tied for third with Young vying for his third win on Tour this year, one which would be his third consecutive victory.

A cut to the leading 50 players and ties has now been made with those two-under par or better advancing to the final round.

Spectator entry is free throughout and live scoring of the final round will be available on europrotour.com. Highlights of the Clipper Logistics Championship will air on Sky Sports Golf on Tuesday, 25th July.

A sparkling round of 63 was enough to edge Luke List to the top of a packed leaderboard at the end of round one of his debut appearance at the Aberdeen Standard Investments Scottish Open.
The American equalled the course record at Gullane Golf Club after getting off to a flying start with four birdies in his first six holes to get to seven under par and one shot ahead of the chasing pack.
His compatriot Rickie Fowler, who won the Scottish Open the last time it was held in Gullane three years ago, also started strongly and was five under par through six holes, thanks to three early birdies and an eagle on the sixth hole. He joins English pair Robert Rock and Lee Westwood, Jens Dantorp of Sweden and Spain’s Scott Fernandez at six under par.
A further eight players are tied for seventh place just a shot further back at the fifth Rolex Series event of 2018, including current Masters Tournament Champion Patrick Reed and the highest placed Scot, Peter Whiteford, who came through a qualifying event at Longniddry last weekend after suffering from arthritis in recent years.
His fellow countrymen Russell Knox, who lifted the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open hosted by the Rory Foundation trophy last week, and Richie Ramsay are one of a further 11 players on four under par on Scotland’s Golf Coast.
Player quotes
Luke List: “The wind is a little tricky on the back, a bunch of crosswind and that left-to-right on three or four holes is a bit tricky. I just managed to make a few mid-range putts and that helps the score card.

“The weather changes so much around here so it’s hard to say if it will be a good draw or bad draw, but I think not too early tomorrow is good. I get to sleep in a little bit and hopefully get some fresh greens and get after that.

It's been over a dozen years since I've been to the UK to play golf, and my first Open next week, so excited about that. Got some good memories here. A dozen years ago, I played the Palmer Cup in southwest Scotland and come up here to Muirfield with my family here, so been a great start.”
Rickie Fowler: “The front was playing easier than the back and getting off fast and getting under par makes it a lot easier to hold on or try to get a couple extra on the way in. Feel like I did a good job of that at five under through six.

“I love playing links golf and being able to use your imagination and hit different shots. I feel like this golf course, you go around and you hit pretty much every club in your bag. You hit driver quite a bit. It's just fun. Especially once the wind starts to blow a bit.”
“After the win in 2015, having a bar named after me in the clubhouse there, it's cool. It's definitely a place that we feel very welcome and it's a great golfing area, and Gullane has obviously been great to me.”
Lee Westwood: “There's a sense that things are getting back to where I wanted to be. I'm hitting the ball on flights I haven't seen for a while but I'm hitting a lot of good putts on the greens. Just trying to make a good action and work on my technique and I know if I get that, keep doing that, then I'm going to see better things and see improvement.
“The greens are receptive if you're on the fairway. It rewards you if you hit the fairway, but it gets fiery and starts to ask you mental question if you start missing fairways.”
Russell Knox: “The energy levels are dreadful to be honest, but it is what it is. I was delighted with four under today.
“Momentum is everything this stage of the game. Especially before France, I had not really gotten anything going and so I needed something and I got it, which is nice. So now it's a test to myself of okay, I've won, finished second, how good can I get, how can I keep it going.
“Obviously there's going to be a time where I can't, but can I keep it going this week, can I keep it going next week. It's a challenge.

Chris Doak's 67 earns him first-day top 10 placing

Mario Galiano Aguilar and Sebastian Soderberg both carded seven under par rounds of 64 to sit one shot ahead of the rest of the field after the first round of the Italian Challenge presented by Cashback World.

The pair both excelled on the first day at Sardinia’s Is Molas Resort, making the most of calm conditions to sit one clear of England’s Jack Singh Brar and Norway’s Eirik Tage Johansen after 18 holes.
Scotland's Chris Doak, pictured, achieved a rare top 10 placing on the opening day with a four-under 67 putting him in T7 position overnight.
Spain’s Galiano Aguilar notched eight birdies and dropped one shot en route to carding the lowest round in his European Challenge Tour career to take the clubhouse lead, which Sweden’s Soderberg matched by bagging seven birdies for his bogey-free score.
Soderberg, who lies in 11th place on the Road to Ras Al Khaimah this season after three top ten finishes, was delighted to return to form following a poor run of recent results.
“It was good out there,” he said. “I got off to a hot start and then made a lot of pars towards the end, and then got a few extra birdies on the final few holes which was nice.
“My golf hasn’t felt too good during the last few weeks. I’m coming off two bad weeks and I’m trying to fight back, so it was nice to shoot a good round today.
“Conditions were fairly easy this morning. There was barely any wind, just a touch of breeze, so you could attack most of the flags.
“The greens are a little tricky, so it helps when you can get close to the pins. I’ve been hitting my wedges really well which gave me plenty of opportunities to score.”
Hot on the heels of the leaders are Johansen and Singh Brar, who both signed for six under par rounds of 65 to sit one shot off the pace after the opening round.
Englishman Singh Brar went bogey-free in the Sardinia sunshine as he continued his impressive rookie season on the Challenge Tour. While Denmark’s Johansen was pleased to put himself in contention after his lowest round of 2018.
“I’ve made a lot of cuts this year but haven’t been able to record a big finish yet,” said Johansen. “I had a top ten result in Saint Omer, which was good, but I’m hoping to build on that and sneak an even better finish at the end of the week.”
Also impressing in Italy was home favourite Filippo Bergamaschi, who is in the mix after carding five birdies and one bogey to post a four under par score of 67.

WALDRON GOES ONE BETTER IN North-East U18s STROKE-PLAY CHAMPIONSHIP
Left to right: Liam Waldron (U18s stroke play champion), George Young (NE District secretary) and Owen Walker, winner of U16s title. Picture by Cal Carson Golf Agency

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Liam Waldron (Royal Aberdeen), beaten finalist in the Scottish U18 boys' championship at Lossiemouth last week, won the Paul Lawrie North-east U18 boys stroke-play title in a tight finish at Kemnay Golf Club today (Thursday).
Scratch player Waldron had rounds of 73 and 76 for a total of seven-over-par 149, one ahead of Owen Walker (Newmachar) who had a double bogey 7 at the 15th in his second-round 76 after a 74 in the opening round. Consolation for Walker in that he won the Under-16s trophy, although it has not been returned yet by last year's winner so there was no presentation to him today
Lewis Watt (Murcar Links) finished a close-up third on 151 (77-74)
Defending champion Cameron Black (Royal Aberdeen) was disqualified for failing to follow the correct procedure when he played a wrong ball during his first round.
Finlay Smith (McDonald Ellon), 17, had his first hole in one with a No 3 iron at the 14th hole (206yd) in a first-round 76. He was partnered by Ethan Main (Murcar Links) and Ryan Lovie (Duff House Royal).
play. Smith finished joint sixth on 155.
The North-east U18 boys' match-play title will be decided tomorrow (Friday) by the leading four scorers in the stroke-play. The ties will be:
9.0 Liam Waldron (Royal Aberdeen) v Ryan Lovie (Duff House Royal)
9.10 Owen Walker (Newmachar) v Lewis Watt (Murcar Links).
Final at 1pm.
