Euan McIntosh only one off halfway lead: Sunday thriller on cards

Irish eyes are smiling at East of Scotland Open: Smith leads by one.

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Eugene Smith (Laytown and Bettystown) could become the first Irishman to win the East of Scotland Open in its 46th staging over the Lundin links in Fife.
With so steady rounds of 68 and 71 for a three-under-par halfway tally of 139, Smith leads by one stroke from Euan McIntosh (Turnhouse), the reinstated amateur who had such a good "comeback" season last year at the age of 49.
McIntosh, pictured, has had a pair of 70s.

Smith's lead could have been two strokes but he bogeyed the 15th as his second round came to an end in the evening sunshine.
Players with 36-hole tallies of 150 and better will contest the final 36 holes on Sunday.
Defending champion James White made the cut on 144 with a pair of 72s. Can he make up five shots on leader Smith who might have to be at his Sunday best to hold the challengers at bay?

Leonie Harm first German to win Ladies Amateur Championship

LGU and RandA LockupR and A NEWS RELEASE
+picture by courtesy of the R and A

Leonie Harm made golfing history at Hillside Golf Club, Southport, Lancashire today as she became the first German to lift the Ladies Amateur Championship trophy since the tournament was first played in 1893.
She defeated American     Stephanie Lau 3 and 2 to win the 18-hole final in hot and sunny conditions and book a spot in the starting field of the RICOH Women’s British Open at Royal Lytham and St Annes in August.
As a result of her victory Leonie also gains exemptions into the 2018 Evian Championship, next year’s US Women’s Open, and the inaugural Augusta National Women’s Amateur Championship in 2019.
The 20-year-old from Stuttgart, who is ranked 33rd in the World Amateur Golf RankingTM, arrived late at the championship and previously admitted she felt underprepared for the week.
Those concerns were unfounded, however, as she defeated Canada’s Jaclyn Lee 4 and 3 in her morning semi-final to progress to the afternoon final. In the other semi-final, Lau saw off home favourite Holly Muse by 5 and 4 to secure her own place in the final.
Harm, who won the German International Amateur earlier this month, was never behind in the match as she kept her cool to play a steady round of golf, which gave her the edge on Lau. The German was handed the lead when her opponent bogeyed the third and her lead was extended at the 4th when Lau missed another putt for par.
Harm’s initial advantage was short-lived after Lau bounced back to produce back-to-back birdies at the 5th and 6th holes. Playing steady par golf, Harm regained her 2-hole lead at the halfway point with Lau chalking up further bogeys at the 7th and 9th. The 21-year-old found herself in the lead heading into the back nine without yet making a birdie.
That was to change as the clinical Harm went 3 up at the 10th. The pair both birdied the next as Lau struggled to find a weakness in the German’s game.
The trophy was in clear sight and, despite dropping a hole at the par-4 15th, the win was never in doubt as the 20-year-old University of Houston student rolled in a 5ft foot putt for par at the 16th to pounce on another Lau bogey and win the match 3 and 2.
The Pam Barton Memorial Salver is awarded to the winner of the Championship, while the runner-up receives The Diana Fishwick Cup. An international team award is presented after the stroke play qualifying rounds, which was also won by Germany with an aggregate score of 290.

The 116th Ladies’ British Open Amateur Championship will be played at Royal County Down from 11-15 June 2019.
Key Quotes:
Leonie Harm, Germany
I’m thrilled to be the champion of course, everyone loves to win.
“I love when I can rely on my game, when my strengths are actually my strengths and I’ve hit my iron shots close all week. So, I’m content with myself.
(On playing in the RICOH Women’s British Open)
“It’s a cool opportunity, I’m really excited. I’ll see if I can arrange it with my coach because I have something else scheduled but obviously the RICOH is the priority for me.
“I had all my team mates supporting me the round before as well so I’m really happy to have them around for me.”
Stephanie Lau, America
“I’m actually really proud of myself so it’s okay, particularly the fact that I rolled in some good birdie putts to fight back.
“Leonie played solidly, and she didn’t really give me much of an opening. The fact that I could just stick in there and get to the 16th was good. I’m proud of myself and I’ve taken a lot from this experience so I’m happy.
“I’ve really enjoyed playing links golf, I know this isn’t normal weather for England but it was just great for me."

weather for England, but I’ve loved it and learned a lot

Kelly retains Colorado lead with Jimenez and other Senior Stars in pursuit
A chip-in on the 18th hole on Friday, his ninth, was one of several highlights during Jerry Kelly's 1-under 69. (USGA/Steven Gibbons)
39th U.S. Senior Open l #USSeniorOpen
Colorado Springs, Colo.
Round 2: Par 70, 7,149 yards l
Jerry Kelly followed up an opening round of 66 with a 1-under-par 69 on Friday to retain the lead after 36 holes of the 39th U.S. Senior Open Championship at The Broadmoor, Colorado.
Kelly’s two-stroke lead from Thursday was whittled by one as Miguel Angel Jimenez, who played alongside Kelly the first two days, added a second straight 2-under 68. The Spaniard, who finished second in this championship in 2016, hit 17 of 18 greens in a bogey-free round on Friday.
Kelly actually fell into a tie for the lead with Jimenez at 3 under after he bogeyed the par-4 17th hole, but he chipped in for birdie on No. 18, the group’s ninth hole.
“I made a tough bogey on No. 17, and then I was in the middle of the fairway on 18, with an easy 8-iron in and I pushed it to the right,” said Kelly, 51, a native of Madison, Wis. “That bothered me going back-to-back, so I knew I had to pull something out. And the chip came out just perfect and rolled right in and that got things going again.”
Kelly retained the advantage the rest of the way, with Jimenez’s second birdie of the day – on the par-5 ninth, which played as the easiest hole for the day – putting him within one stroke entering Round 3.
“I’m happy with my game,” said Jimenez, 54, who hit only nine greens in Round 1 but fashioned an identical score. “I played very solid, and the only thing I hope for the weekend is to hit the ball that way and hole some more putts.”
Tim Petrovic, who played college golf with Kelly at the University of Hartford, shot the low round for the championship, a 5-under 65, to finish 36 holes alone in third place at 3-under 137. Petrovic, 51 and playing in his first U.S. Senior Open, made the turn at 3 over for the championship, but reeled off six birdies in his final eight holes.
Another two strokes back are five players at 1-under 139, including Davis Love III, who is making his debut in this championship at age 54. The 1997 PGA champion is joined by Jay Haas, who chipped in for eagle on his final hole; Paul Goydos, who had a birdie-eagle-birdie run midway through his incoming nine highlighted by a 127-yard hole-out on the par-4 14th; Philip Golding, of England, who carded a morning 67; and Deane Pappas, of South Africa.
Kirk Triplett, the runner-up to Kenny Perry in 2017, is alone in ninth place at even par, rebounding with a Friday 66 after an opening-round 74. Two-time champion Perry slipped to a 4-over 74 in Round 2 and is tied for 32nd through 36 holes at 5-over 145.
Philip Golding is the leading British player in T4 position on 139 with scores of 72 and 67.
Paul Broadhurst is T10 on 141 (71-70).
Colin Montgomerie is T20 on 144 (71-73)

Law and McDonald beat Denmark cut

EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
Mark Flindt Haastrup continued to impress on home soil as he took the lead at the end of Day Two at the Made in Denmark Challenge presented by Ejner Hessel.
The Dane followed up his opening round of 64 with a four under par round of 67 to move ahead by three shots and enhance his chance of victory in-front of his home fans.
The 34 year old holed four birdies and only dropped one shot on the tricky back nine – his first nine holes – and remained in control down after the turn. He made another two birdies and only one bogey to move away from Englishman Marcus Armitage and the chasing pack.
Armitage lit up the Backtee Course at Himmerland Golf and Spa Resort with six birdies in his first nine holes to race up the leaderboard.
But the 2016 Foshan Open champion could not catch Haastrup as he shot two over par after the turn to card a round of 67.
With the chance to claim his first European Challenge Tour victory since 2008, Haastrup has used his knowledge of the course to his advantage and is thrilled with his prospects for the weekend.
“I’m in a place in my career and also on the Rankings where I’ll take a win anywhere,” he said. “Obviously, when the chance to win is in Denmark and at Himmerland where the course is so good and in such good shape, plus there’s a good atmosphere with all the people, then it would be great.
“It was a little bit tougher with the wind today, but I’m very happy. I was maybe a little shakier with the irons, which were spot on yesterday, but I got some birdies here and there and it was a good round.
“It’s been a long time since I’ve been leading a tournament, but I don’t see why I wouldn’t be comfortable out in-front. I think I’ll cope fine being in the final group and if I don’t, well there is another day where I can shoot a good score.”
Joachim B. Hansen and Marco Iten, Haastrup’s co-leaders from the opening round, could not take advantage of their first day position, as the pair both shot one over par. However, Antti Ahokas and Christopher Feldborg Nielsen both challenged the lead with their seven under par rounds of 65.
Feldborg Nielsen made a hole-in-one on the par three 16th on his was to his lowest round of the year, while Finland’s Ahokas began a late charge but finished double bogey-birdie-double bogey to also sit four shots behind the Dane.
