Paul O'Hara wins at Forfar with six-under-par 63

despite lost-ball double bogey

REPORT FROM JOHN HENRY
For our event today at Forfar Golf Club - the Golf Finance Summer Series Event 5 -  we were  warmly welcomed by head secretary Stuart Wilson, the 2004 British amateur champion and Walker Cup player.
The course, measuring at 6170 yards with narrow, tree-lined  fairways with some thick rough to make it a little bit more testing, was in fantastic condition and a very tricky course indeed!
Not tricky enough however for our Golf Finance Summer Series no.1 Paul O'Hara who blasted in a magnificent score of six-under-par 63, even with a lost ball double bogey on hole 10! Very impressive.
He won by two strokes from runner-up Mark Hillson.
Massive thanks to all at Forfar for hosting us and as always Golf Finance for sponsoring.

Our next event is at Longniddry GC on Sunday 1st July 3-4pm tee times and is now available to enter .

Craig Stephen breaks Aboyne course record with a 61

History was made at Aboyne Golf Club yesterday after the course record was broken after a 24-year wait.

Playing in the second round of the Club Championship, Craig Stephen (+1 handicap), shot a 61 to shave a stroke off the record set by Colin Forbes in 1994.

Craig, a recent graduate from Brevard College in North Carolina, said "It felt like a normal round to start with, making 4 solid pars then birdied 5,6 and 7 and that got my attention.  Further birdies at 9 and 10 really got me thinking about the record and once I hit the 11th fairway I said to my playing partner Brian that this is my best chance to do it.  I birdied 14 and 16 to get to -7 and then made 2 solid pars to finish."

Craig went on "Shooting the course record at Aboyne has always been one of my goals and to finally do it I am very pleased.  It was nice to get a little note from Colin last evening congratulating me too.  The course is in fantastic condition and the greens are just sublime all down to Colin and his hardworking team of greenstaff."

Club President Justin Grant said “Aboyne has a long history of producing excellent young players through our junior section as epitomised by Craig.  Through his hard work and dedication to his sport he has continued to progress, and it is clear the time he spent in the USA has paid dividends.”

Justin added “Craig has been our Club Champion for the past five years, so it seems only right and proper that this longstanding record is broken by a player of his calibre. Everyone at the club is delighted for him.”

Justin went on “Aboyne is due to host the Scottish Golf Men’s North-East Open in August and we look forward to seeing if the record can be challenged again by Scotland’s top amateur players

+Colin Forbes (Aboyne GC's Head Greenkeeper) was the previous record holder scoring a 62 on 21st July 1994.

Trish Johnson wins $25,000 with Suquamish Clearwater Legends Cup success
SEATTLE, June 10, 2018 – England's Trish Johnson woke up her putter and closed out the win today in The LPGA Legends Tour’s inaugural Suquamish Clearwater Legends Cup presented by Boeing.
Johnson, pictured, opened Sunday’s final round with bogeys on her first two holes at White Horse Golf Club in Kingston, Wash., but steadied herself with birdies on four of her next nine holes to eventually take the victory with a 36-hole score of 8-under 136.
The player from London won by a five-stroke margin over Lisa Grimes of Arizona at 3-under 141, and Florida’s Michelle McGann at 1-under 143. It was Johnson’s second Legends Tour victory.
“When the pin positions are at the front of the greens, the course is playing at its hardest because the entrances are narrow,” said Johnson, who carded rounds of 66-70 en route to her victory. “You have a shorter club into the green, but you also have nowhere to miss it.”
Coming into this week as a winner of 25 professional tournaments, including three LPGA titles and 19 wins on the Ladies European Tour, Johnson credited solid driving and iron play for her win. She missed only one fairway in the final round.
Once she rolled in a birdie on the par-5 third hole, the eight-time European Solheim Cup team member settled into a rhythm and extended her lead to four strokes with a birdie on No. 11.
“I putted so-so, but over the last 10 holes, I made the putts when I needed to and that’s the important thing,” added Johnson, who recorded par on her last seven holes to earn the winner’s prize of $25,000 in the $175,000 event.
Grimes moved to 4 under with a birdie on the ninth hole, but lost a shot with bogey on No. 12. She was never able to catch the front runner.
Wendy Ward, a resident of Edwall, Washington, finished 10th in her Legends Tour debut. The Texas native left the LPGA Tour as a full-time player in 2015 and has spent the last few years running a cattle ranch with her husband outside Spokane, Wash.
When Ward turned 45 and became eligible to compete on the official senior tour of the LPGA this year, she decided to enter this week’s event.
“It was a grind, but the grind was fun again,” said Ward, a four-time LPGA Tour winner and three-time U.S. Solheim Cup Team member.
“I’m going to have to sharpen my skills to be competitive on this Tour,” added Ward. “I need to start practicing again.”
Rounding out the top five in the Suquamish Clearwater Legends Cup was Sweden’s Liselotte Neumann and Nancy Scranton of Florida, tied for fourth at even-par 144.

USA SCORE RECORD CURTIS CUP WIN (17-3) AFTER GB and I LOSE SINGLES 8-0

R and A NEWS RELEASE
The United States defeated Great Britain and Ireland by a record-breaking 17-3 scoreline to win the 40th Curtis Cup match at Quaker Ridge, New York. The United States' points total is the highest recorded by any team in the Curtis Cup since they defeated GB and I 14½-3½ at Denver Country Club in 1982.
The winning margin of 14 points also surpassed the record of 11 points set in that same match.
The hosts held a 9-3 lead over GB and I going into today’s singles matches following the six foursomes matches and six four-balls matches played over the first two days. Sophia Schubert extended the lead for the home side to 10-3 after beating Olivia Mehaffey 2 and 1 in the first match.
Moments later, Kristen Gillman secured the vital point which clinched the Curtis Cup for the United States after a comprehensive 5 and 4 win over Annabell Fuller gave them an unassailable 11-3 lead. In doing so, Gillman became only the third player after Stacey Lewis (2008) and Bronte Law (2016) to go 5-0-0 in a single Curtis Cup match since the new three-day format was introduced.
Fifteen-year-old Lucy Li added a 5 and 4 victory against India Clyburn before Jennifer Kupcho’s 2 and 1 success over Lily May Humphreys made it 13-3 to the United States. A long-range birdie from the world's leading woman amateur golfer, Lilia Vu, made sure of a win against Sophie Lamb by two holes.
Andrea Lee came back from two down on the outward half to close her match out against Alice Hewson on the 17th hole, winning by 2 and 1 and give her side a 15-3 lead.
Lauren Stephenson sealed her match against Shannon McWilliam in style with a  birdie putt which dropped from around 12 feet to give the 20-year-old a 2 and 1 victory. Mariel Galdiano defeated Paula Grant by one hole in the last match out on the course to give the United States a 17-3 win.
The United States now lead the overall series 29-8-3. The 41st Curtis Cup match will be played at Conwy (Caernarvonshire) Golf Club in North Wales from  June 12-14, 2020.
Key Quotes:
Elaine Farquharson-Black, Captain, Great Britain and Ireland “We’re obviously very disappointed with the scoreline and all you can do is congratulate the United States on their win and the very high standard of golf they have played this week.
“We have played good golf in spells, particularly on the first day, but at this level you have to have more consistency and at times we’ve just not performed as well as we would have liked.
“We have a very young team and the players will have learned lots from this experience which will stand them in good stead for the future. They have given it their all this in this match and I’m very proud of them.”
Virginia Derby Grimes, Captain, United States “It’s a great feeling and of course I've never been on a losing side as a player either. It's good to see the team get to experience that winning feeling.
“Last night we just talked a little bit and I just told them to enjoy the moment and be patient on the greens. The whole week has been phenomenal and I can't say any one moment has stood out. There have been so many great moments.”
