Paul Streeter held his nerve to complete a wire-to-wire victory at the Travis Perkins Masters by posting a final round one over par 73 to finish on 12 under par at Woburn Golf Club.
He was pushed all the way by an inspired Clark Dennis who carded a six under par 66 to finish on ten under in second place, two shots behind the winner.
But the day – and the week – belongs to Streeter after equalling Colin Montgomerie’s tournament record of 12 under at the Travis Perkins Masters on his first visit to the Duke’s Course.
The Englishman started with a birdie at the second to settle his nerves but a bogey on the seventh meant he made the turn in 35, while Dennis began closing the gap with a four under 31. The 2017 Order of Merit winner continued to apply the pressure with a two under par 35 on the back nine, but Streeter kept him at arm’s length to win by two shots.
The Travis Perkins Masters is the 51 year old’s maiden Staysure Tour title and he was visibly delighted to join the winners’ circle.
“It was one of the longer rounds of golf but I’m absolutely over the moon,” he said. “I played nicely today; I felt very nervous before I teed off but once I got that tee shot away off the first, I felt alright. I played with two great guys, so it was very relaxed out there.
“When I played a practice round earlier in the week, I thought ‘crikey, I’d take anything under par round here’.
“So when I shot six under and seven under, I really didn’t see that score out there. I played great all week, so I can’t complain.”
The victory wasn’t as comfortable as it might have been; Streeter had a seven-shot lead going into the final round and although he couldn’t increase the advantage, he was pleased with how he held off the threat of Dennis.
“It seemed like every hole Clark kept holing putts for birdies,” he said. “But then when I hit it in the rubbish on the 13th, I holed about a ten-footer for bogey, which was massive.
“I then hit a great drive down the next which got me back on track. I hit some lovely shots coming in, which was really pleasing because I was really nervous coming down the last few holes.”
Streeter admits fellow Staysure Tour Member and good friend David Shacklady’s victory at the VTB Russian Open Golf Championship (Senior) somewhat inspired him by knowing he can compete towards the top of leaderboards.
“A win is fantastic,” he said. “My mate Shackers won a few weeks ago in Moscow and he was telling me that it’s my turn, I’ve got to do one now. It’s been a fantastic week.
“We play practice rounds together all the time so just to know that I can compete is fantastic. It certainly gave me a bit of a kick up the bum to go out there and know I can do it.”
Welshman Stephen Dodd secured his fourth top five finish of the season by posting a one under par 71 to finish on seven under par in third place, while Gary Orr was a shot further back in fourth on six under.
Shacklady and countryman Barry Lane finished in tied fifth on five under, with Mark McNulty finishing in seventh on three under par.
With his victory at Woburn Golf Club, Streeter jumps from 30th to 16th on the Staysure Tour Order of Merit, with runner-up Dennis moving from ninth to fifth. Dodd is a place above the American having gone from sixth to fourth.
