Carris Trophy English U18 boys open stroke play

Gregorio makes his move – but

Barclay Brown is chasing hard

Italy’s Gregorio de Leo made the big move today to lead the Carris Trophy on nine-under play at Fulford Golf Club, York - but England’s Barclay Brown is chasing him hard and is just two behind in this English U18 boys' open stroke play championship over 72 holes.
De Leo – the Italian boys’ champion – shot seven-under 65 in today’s third round, while Yorkshire’s Brown carded 68 to set up an intriguing finale to the English U18 boys’ open championship.
The difference between them was probably the putter. De Leo (pictured top) had 26 putts and came off the course commenting “My putter was so good.” Brown, from Hallamshire, had contrasting fortunes, remarking: “I didn’t hole any putts. A 6ft putt was the longest I made.”
But he certainly wasn’t dismayed. “I’m happy with the result. I knew someone would shoot a good score and I just wanted to keep myself in it, to stay as close as I could to the lead.”
And Brown is definitely pleased with his position after finding himself three over through nine holes of the first round. He eventually signed for 73 on day one, which included six penalty shots, and joked: “I only actually hit 67 shots that day.” Since then he’s forged ahead with a pair of 68s.
De Leo came out today intending to go for it – only to bogey his first hole. He got it back with a birdie on the third but dropped another shot on the 5th. However, that was when his round came to life. He birdied the next six holes and then finished with a flourish with birdies on the 17th and 18th – for the third day in a row.
Brown was very steady, with only one bogey and birdies on all of the par fives.
The other big mover of the day was Matt Freeman (pictured below), who started the third round seven shots off the lead and tied 35th. He went out determined to close the gap and returned six-under 66 to share third place on three-under. “I had to go for it,” said the 17-year-old from Notts Golf Club.
He got off to a great start with birdies on the first two holes, including a chip-on on the 2nd. “I knew it was good as soon as I hit it.” But the real highlight was his back nine of five-under par. “I really feel that I’m back in it,” said Freeman.
He’s tied with Dubai-based Josh Hill, who signed off with a birdie on the last for a round of one-over 73.
Three players are tied on two-under: Australia’s Jose de Sousa, who was three-under today, Yorkshire’s Ben Schmidt (Rotherham) and Harrison Arnold from Castle Royle in Berkshire.
Finland’s Eemil Alajarvi is one-under while Charlie Salter (Northamptonshire County) shot 67 to join a group of nine players on level par.
