On the 20th and 21st June 2018 seven North-east golfers played six rounds in 24 hours, racking up a total of 108 holes… all without any sleep!
As part of the fund-raising efforts for Jacobis Wish, the Solstice of Swing golf challenge started at 11pm on Inverallochy Golf Course, using light up golf balls to play the first round in the dark!
Then it was on to round two at Fraserburgh, where increasing levels of daylight made play a little easier, but a strengthening wind meant it was still tough going.
To make up two four-balls, a guest golfer joined the group at each course and for the third round I was delighted to join them for 18 holes at Rosehearty. Teeing off at just before 6am, yes… that’s right, the lads had already completed two rounds by 5.30am!
The wind was now gusting at close to 50mph and conditions were brutal out there. Playing six rounds in a day is hard enough but the wind made this challenge hit another level of difficulty.
A big thanks to the Rosehearty Captain, Drew Whyte and to Leona at the Masons Arms who together, provided much needed coffee and bacon rolls half way round at 7.15am.
After Rosehearty the team set off for the fourth round at Turiff followed by a round at Royal Tarlair. As I write this I am back in the comfort of my home but as I look out the window I can only imagine how challenging the game on the cliff top at Tarlair is going to be!
The final stage was another 18 holes at Inverallochy before the mission was complete.

September 9th 2017 was the day our world changed forever. Our beautiful son Jacobi, who was only 4, was diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD). For those of you who do not know about this condition, DMD is a severe muscle wasting disease caused by the lack of a protein called dystrophin. Over time, the muscles in a boy affected by DMD, will gradually degenerate, resulting in the loss of ability to walk and the need for a wheelchair from ages of 8 to 13. This cruel disease also reduces life expectancy and at present, there is no cure.
In the aftermath of Jacobi’s diagnosis we felt lost, alone and without hope. As a family we have now gained in strength and feel a strong need to be proactive. We want to make a difference to Jacobi’s life and to all other little boys affected by DMD and for this reason we made the decision to start fund-raising.
Our mission is to raise money to fund research and clinical trials in order to find a cure for this cruel disease. Over the last few years, significant advances have been made and we, along with other parents, feel that there is hope on the horizon. The Jacobi’s Wish Trust has been formed to join with Duchenne UK’s mission to ‘End Duchenne in Ten.’ We aim to keep you informed about Jacobi and the fundraising events we have planned throughout the year.

However, when you do it with friends and have a laugh it’s easy. The hard part is in the organisation of such an event and that’s why fund-raising has two ‘i’s’; they stand for inspiration and innovation. The Whyte family and friends have been fine examples of their push to help raise money for this great cause Duchenne UK by not just organising this golf event but many others. Everyone of us that took part in the Solstice of Swing feel awesome that our participation could help make a difference to end Duchenne in Ten!” Neil Heron
