MacGARVIE SURGES SEVEN SHOTS CLEAR AT LOSSIE AS BENSON (65) LEADS MEN

The 96th Scottish Students Golf Championships continued in breezy but majestic conditions at the Moray Golf Club, Lossiemouth.

In the women's event, Hazel MacGarvie surged into a seven-shot lead at the halfway stage, thanks to a four under par round of 67 over the New Course.
The Stirling University fresher was unperturbed by bogeys at the third and 16th holes, sweeping in three birdies in either half of a very assured round.

Jasmine Mackintosh (North East Scotland College) maintained her solid form with a sure-footed 73 (+2), birdieing the third and 14th to hold second place overnight on 147

Three time champion Gemma Batty (Stirling) is sitting in equal fourth place, 1 shot behind third-placed Lieve Van Veggel (St Andrews) who carded a round of 75 for 148

The pick of the men's rounds came from the University of Strathclyde's Andrew Benson who blistered his way to a 5-under par 65 over the New Course. His round featured six birdies and an eagle at the par 5 14th, propelling him to the top of the leaderboard on three-under 137

Alexander Wilson (St Andrews) shot a  69 to occupy second place at the halfway mark. Wilson steadied after bogeys at 2, 6 and 7 and was then bogey free - adding birdies at the 8th, 10th, 14th and 16th.

The men's top three is completed by overnight joint leader Michael Lawrie (Stirling) whose 73 for 140 left him  one shot ahead of 2017 champion and team-mate Laird Shepherd.

A special mention to Sean Davidson (Stirling) who achieved his first hole in one at the eighth, courtesy of a knock-down 8-iron. Congratulations Sean!
