Fyfe top Scot with a 67 in South Africa
By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Cawder's Calum Fyfe, with a five-under-par round of 67 over a long course of 6,997 metres, fared best of the five Scots in action on the first day of the South African men's open amateur stroke-play championship at Pecanwood Golf and Country Club, Bojanala today.
A double bogey 6 at the ninth was the only black spot on Fyfe's card which included birdies at regular intervals - the fourth, fifth, 10th, 12th, 14th, 15th and 16th.
Calum (pictured) will start the second round in joint eighth place, three behind the South African leader Keaton Slatter.
Scottish amateur champion Sam Locke from Stonehaven and Peebles' Darren Howie shared 25th place on 69. Locke had a bogey-free card with birdies at the second, seventh and 14th.
Howie spoiled a seven-birdie card with a double blogey 5 at the third. He also had two bogeys.
Euan Walker from Ayrshire is T39 on 70.
St Andrews' John Paterson did not have a good day, a six-over-par 78 leaving him in a share of 135th place in a field of 140 competitors.
