Eilidh Watson repeats Ladies' Highland

Open victory at Pitlochry

Muckhart's Eilidh Watson, pictured right by Kathleen Duncan, retained the scratch title and the Atholl Cup in the Ladies' Highland Open which ended at Pitlochry Golf Club today (Friday). It was an impressive performance from start to finish by Eilidh who returns to the United States next month for her final year at Stetson University, Florida.
She was the leading qualifier by nine strokes over 36 holes of stroke-play at the start of the week and she beat the second seed, Louise Fraser (Kingsknowe), by 3 and 2 in the final to land the Atholl Cup for the second year in a row.

Watson won the first hole and was never brought back to square by her opponent. Out in an approximate two-over-par 37 and two up, Eilidh went three up with a par at the short 11th and the next four holes were halved to Watson to win on the 16th green.
Only one title was won by a home course player. Louise Kelly, who had beaten Pitlochry clubmate Kay Fleming 3 and 2 in the morning semi-finals, ground out a 2 and 1 victory in the Craigower Trophy (Bronze) final against Rosemary Lindsay (Williamwood).
Young Lauren Pirie (Pitlochry) lost by 2 and 1 to North player Keri McGann (Nairn Dunbar) in the final of the Silver Handicap section. In the semi-finals 14-year-old Pirie had won by 3 and 1 against Gill Punton (Furness) despite a hole in one, with a nine iron,  by the English player at the fourth hole.

Margaret Chalmers, whose home club is Downfield but has also been a member of Pitlochry Golf for many years, travelled through from Dundee to watch the scratch final as she has done ever since she stopped playing in the tournament. She won the trophy 50 years ago! Margaret is pictured left by Kathleen Duncan with the trophy.

Englishman Rai's 65 makes him halfway

leader in Normandy Challenge

EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
Aaron Rai moved one step closer to European Tour status as he took the halfway lead of Le Vaudreuil Golf Challenge after a flawless six under par second round of 65 in Normandy.
Three European Challenge Tour victories in a season earn immediate promotion to the Race to Dubai and the Englishman, whose mother was born in Kenya, has already triumphed twice in 2017, winning the season-opening Barclays Kenya Open and the Andalucía Costa del Sol Match Play 9.
Runner-up at Golf PGA France du Vaudreuil 12 months ago, Rai has put himself in pole position to go one better this weekend as he leads by two shots – aided by not dropping a single shot for his first two rounds.
“I’m feeling pretty good,” said the 22 year old. “It’s been a very consistent and very steady two days, and to go bogey-free through 36 holes is very nice, so it’s been a very good start – but it is just a start, there’s a long way to go.
“It’s definitely a tough course to play well on. There are a lot of run off areas around the greens and it’s also quite firm, we’ve had a bit of wind over the first two days which has made things quite tricky, so you have to be very strategic.
“I’ve been trying to hit a lot of greens and just give myself chances – I think anywhere on the green, you’re normally not going to leave yourself too far away, so that’s been the plan so far and luckily enough it’s gone pretty well.
I think you have to keep in the frame of mind of doing your own thing if you want to do well. If you get a little bit too result-orientated and focused on the scores too much it can become very tough to perform as well as you can.
“It maybe crosses my mind occasionally, what I could achieve this week – it would be wrong to say that it doesn’t. But I try to switch off as much as possible away from the course and have other things to do, other interests, because it is pretty intense on the course and maintaining that level through the week of a tournament is pretty tough.”
Rai’s nearest challengers are overnight co-leaders Ryan Evans and Mark Tullo who both shot rounds of 69 to move to nine under par, one shot ahead of leading Frenchman Mathieu Fenasse and Oliver Lindell.
Two shots further back, in a share of sixth place, are Morten Ørum Madsen, Christopher Mivis and Borja Virto, with 66 players – including two French amateurs Frederic Lacroix and Dimitri Mary – making the halfway cut at one-over 143 and better

Gavin makes hay while the sun shines at

Turriff with a double whammy success

Gavin Hay, second left, and the Morrison Motors team he led to victory in the Turriff pro-am team event.

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Highlander Gavin Hay (Grantown-on-Spey), pictured above, came down from the hills to score a double whammy victory in today's pro-am at Turriff Golf Club.

Hay won the first prize of £1,041 with a four-under-par 66 to head a field of 24 pros and he also led the Morrison Motors trio of amateurs to victory in the pro-am with a 15-under-par better ball of 125. The first five pros in that (Hay, G McBain, S Henderson, C Ronald and S Gray), earned £125 each. Which all added up to Gavin's biggest payday on the Tartan Tour this year.
It was Hay's second win of the season, his first coming at Ayr Belleisle last month shortly after he had finished joint second in the Northern Open at Lossiemouth.
Hay had an eagle 3 at the sixth and a birdie at the 13th before a grandstand finish saw him birdie the 16th, 17th and 18th to come home in three-under 31.
His two bogeys came at the fifth and short 15th.
Greig Hutcheon (Paul Lawrie Golf Centre Inchmarlo) and Peterhead's Ross Cameron (Saltire Energy) finished second and third, completing a 1-2-3 by North and North-east pros.
Hutch had seven birdies in his 67. He covered the inward half in 31 strokes but a bogey at the 17th cost him a share of first place although an £833 payslip was a nice consolation prize.
Cameron had a double bogey 7 at the 12th in his 69 which earned him £625.
The three amateurs in the Meldrum Motors winning team with Gavin Hay were Colin Chalmers (handicap 15), Douglas Shand (14) and Graham Fraser (17).

Stewart and Fenwick slump in wind and rain

at EuroPro Tour final day

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Michael Stewart  (Troon Welbeck) and Dunbar's Neil Fenwick, the only Scots to survive the second-round cut in this week's EuroPro Tour event at Burnham and Berrow Golf Club, had disappointing final rounds in the wind and rain which made the last day a survival of the fittest.
Stewart shot 74, 66 and 76 over the par-70 Somerset lay-out for a total of six-over 216. A T20 finish earned him £485.
Fenwick had two 8s - the first at the par-5 sixth and the second at the par-4 15th - in halves of 39 and 43 for an 82 which followed scores of 68 and 74. His aggregate of 14-over 224 placed him 48th and earned him only £315.
Jonathan Caldwell (Clandeboye) from Northern Ireland won the £10,000 first prize by two strokes with scores of 66, 72 and 69 for a three-under total of 207. Runner-up was Jason Timmis (Greenway Hall) with scores of 70, 72 and 67 which earned him £6,000.
Greg Payne (Camberley Heath) finished third on 211 (68-72-71) and earned £3,000.

Caldwell wins £10,000 prize by two strokes

NEWS RELEASE BY NICK TEALE
Jonathan Caldwell carded a final-round 69 to win the COBRA PUMA GOLF Championship by two shots on nine under par on a wet and windy day at Machynys Peninsula Golf Club in Llanelli.

The HotelPlanner.com PGA EuroPro Tour event was suspended for 1 hour 45 minutes in the early stages of the final round due to heavy and persistent rain causing standing water on the course. At that stage Caldwell (Clandeboye Golf Club) led on seven under par, with overnight leader Chris Evans (Hatchford Brook Golf Club) having started with a double and then triple bogey.

Jason Timmis (Greenway Hall Golf Club) put pressure on the Northern Irishman with a fantastic final-round 67, five under par, to finish seven under but four birdies to just one bogey on the back nine saw Caldwell to nine under and his second EuroPro title.

“It has been a long day, but I am absolutely over the moon,” said Caldwell, who wins £10,000 as well as a brand new Motocaddy S3 PRO electric trolley with lithium battery, Bushnell Pro X2 Range Finder and Bolle sunglasses.

“I made two par saves at 16 and 17 and they were massive. There were always going to be holes where you have to scramble and it just happened to be two of my last three, but I am delighted to get the job done.

“It was a game of patience. Pars were huge out there and birdies are even bigger. It is massive to get the win, you need to on this tour, and it would be great to get another win and secure that top five position on the Race To Amendoeira.”

Caldwell climbs to third on the tour rankings, from which the top five at the end of the season earn promotion to the Challenge Tour.

Greg Payne (Camberley Heath / MindSet4Golf) finished third on five under while five golfers shared fourth having finished four under par, including 2016 Amateur Champion Scott Gregory.

Highlights of the COBRA PUMA GOLF Championship will air on Sky Sports Golf on Tuesday, August 1. The HotelPlanner.com PGA EuroPro Tour continues with the Matchroom Sport Championship at Luton Hoo Hotel, Golf & Spa, Wednesday, July 26 – Friday, July 28.
