Highland Links pro-am report and scores
LEADER HENDERSON HAS CHANCE TO
CHANGE HIS FORTUNES IF HE KEEPS
HIS NERVE AT DORNOCH FINISH
By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Neil Henderson has won only £879 this season from his campaigning on the Tartan Tour and the PGA EuroPro Tour, on which he has missed the cut on his last two outings.
But the Renaissance Club man's fortunes could be about to change.
He leads the Highland Linka 54-hole pro-am tournament after a three-under-par at Nairn on Monday, followed by a three-under-par 69 at Castle Stuart today when he became the first man in the tournament to get under par at the latter venue
The classic Royal Dornoch links stand between Henderson and the biggest cheque of his pro career - £8,000. If he can keep his nerve.
He has started both his rounds so far, perhaps tentatively with a bogey 6 at Castle Stuart's second hole and, on Monday, he had a couple of early bogeys at Nairn.
But both times he settled to come away strongly, birdieing the fifth, ninth, 12th and 18th at Castle Stuart in impressive halves of 35 and 34.
His nearest challengers, two behind on 139, are Neil Fenwick (Dunblane), who plays Nairn after a 72 at Castle Stuart and a 67 at Royal Dornoch; Gareth Wright (West Linton) who plays Castle Stuart after a 69 at Royal Dornoch and a 70 at Nairn; and overnight leader Paul O'Hara (Clydeway Golf) who opened with a 67 at Nairn but could only match the par of 72 at the testing Castle Stuart.
Sharing fifth place on 141 are Gavin Hay (Grantown on Spey), 72 at Royal Dornoch, 69 at Nairn, and Greig Hutcheon (Paul Lawrie Golf Centre Inchmarlo), 69 at Royal Dornoch and 72 at Nairn.
It promises to be an exciting last day of the event which has a pro prizefund of £50,150 up for grabs. Runner-up gets £6,500 and the third best finisher £5000.
The top 10 will all earn four-figure cheques.
Winning PGA captain Albert MacKenzie (Saunton), who hails from Hopeman on the Moray Firth coastline, is not going to win a four-figure cheque. He is back on 154 after rounds of 75 and 79. But that is not to say that Albert has not enjoyed himself.
Playing three of the best links in the world of golf will have warmed the cockles of his heart.
