Aberdonian Michael Sim wins in Australia
By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Sim
fired a 5-under 67 around the Pines course, Queensland for a one-shot victory over
Matthew Guyatt.
It has been a solid year for Sim on course, culminating with victory.
"I can't complain about the year that I have had. It has been quite solid and given me plenty of confidence for the year ahead," said Sim whose father George was an Aberdeen Links golf club member. George and the Sim family emigrated to Australia when Michael was only five years old.
"Since I played this event last year, I have built a great friendship with Nick Hughston from Mercedes Benz Gold Coast, and it was great to again have an opportunity to play with him today. It no doubt helps your game when you are playing with a group you feel comfortable with and this certainly assisted with me getting up for the win today."
Sim had his 31st birthday on October 23. A former World No 1 amateur, he won four times on the American Nationwide Tour (forerunner of the Web.com Tour) and won automatic promotion to the US PGA Tour in 2007.
But his career was blighted by a stress fracture of the spine and he has had long spells out of the game.
