The young Renfrewshire Golf Union team is poised to win the West of Scotland Boys’ Championship for the first time.  With co-leaders Dunbartonshire beaten by Glasgow, a win was required for top of the league placing when the boys travelled to Kirkhill Golf Club to face a strong Lanarkshire side.

Jorg Irvine from Erskine was the first game out and things did not look good when, with the game all square at the eighteenth, he found the greenside bunker.  However, a great up and down from the sand was good enough for victory.  The next three games went to Lanarkshire who had three players from the home course in the side but, with strong winds making life difficult for all, the more experienced boys in the Renfrewshire squad started to turn thing round when Lewis Breslin from Fereneze recorded a resounding 4 and 3 victory followed by good wins from Alastair McNaughton and County Champion Jack Currie.  It was left to Old Ranfurly’s Matthew Dalrymple to clinch full points in his match against Scottish Internationalist Andrew Thomson.  It was a very close game which went to the last, with Matthew winning one up.

The final game of the season is at Elderslie Golf Club on Sunday whena win over Dunbartonshire will clinch the title.
