Jason Gore eyes second win on US Tour after failing in plans to retire from pro golf

GREENSBORO, North Carolina – Two years ago at the Web.com Tour Championship as he once again found himself clawing away at US PGA Tour status, Jason Gore, pictured above, confided in your scribe that he was considering retirement from professional golf.
Not long after that he took it a step further, sending out a resume in hopes of being able to spend more time at home with his wife and two children. That didn’t work out well, either.
“I tried to give it up. I couldn't even do that right,” he laughed on Saturday at the Wyndham Championship. “I applied for the Pepperdine coaching job, but apparently I wasn't the guy that was going to further the Christian mission at Pepperdine University.”
Gore went on to explain that being turned down for what would amount to a day job was “the best thing [the school] ever did for me.”

Instead of recruiting new players for a college this week at the U.S. Amateur, Gore will head into the final round at the Wyndham with a two-stroke lead and his sights set on his second US Tour title after a third-round 62.
This season has been signature Gore, a slow start followed by a steady climb back to competitive relevance and finally a late-season push to maintain his Tour status.
Gore began the week 166th on the FedEx Cup points list and likely needs to finish no worse than solo third to advance to the pla-yoffs, which begin next week at The Barclays.
“Maybe I'm a slow learner,” he said when asked why he seems to end up in this position. “You’d think a chubby guy from California couldn't handle the heat and humidity. Maybe it brings my focus up.”
