Carrick Neill Scottish open amateur stroke play
GREAT SCOTT! SANDY FLIES THE FLAG FOR
THE NORTH AT LOSSIEMOUTH
Nairn youngster Sandy Scott is keeping the North flag flying with a share of the first-round lead on four-under-par 67 in the Carrick Neill Scottish men's open amateur stroke play championship over Moray Golf Club's Lossiemouth links' Old Course.
On a jam-packed leaderboard - 26 players better the past of 71 - Scott is shoulder to shoulder in the pole position with fellow Scot Liam Johnston from the opposite end of the country, Dumfries, and Englishmen William Whiteoak from Shipley in Yorkshire and James McCormick from Cheshire's Styal
Scott birdied the second, seventh and ninth in 32 to the turn, dropped his only shot at the 12th, and finished strongly with birdies at the 16th and 17th.
The strongest finish of the leaders came from James Newburn of Prestbury, Cheshire with birdies at the last three holes for a 68 and a share of fourth place on 68.
On 69 are Scotland's "likely lads" - Ewen Ferguson (Bearsden), a winner of two 72-hole events already this season, Connor Syme (Drumoig), Walker Cup candidate Graeme Robertson (Glenbervie) and late finisher Adam Dunton (McDonald Ellon).
Dunton has played for Scotland and has decided that the life of a tour pro golfer is not for him.
The leading 40 and ties after 36 holes will contest Sunday's final 36 holes. With the scoring so low, a par tally of 142 might be the limit mark ... unless the wind blows.
Then we would have a different ball game.
