Tom Lehman held off Michael Allen and Kirk Triplett by one shot to capture his first Champions Tour win since 2012. (Stan Badz/PGA TOUR)
GLENVIEW, Illinois (AP) -- Tom Lehman made a 12-foot birdie putt on the final hole Sunday to win the Encompass Championship on the US Champions Tour.
The 55-year-old Lehman closed with a 2-under 70 at North Shore and had a 15-under 201 total for his eighth senior title and first since 2012. He rebounded from bogeys on Nos. 13 and 14 -- his only dropped strokes of the week -- with birdies on Nos. 15 and 16, parred the par-3 17th and won on the par-4 18th.
"It wasn't my very best performance today, but it was good enough," Lehman said.
Michael Allen and Kirk Triplett tied for second, a stroke back. Allen shot 67, and Triplett had a 68.
Lehman, the 1996 Open winner, opened with rounds of 65 and 66 to take a three-stroke lead into the final round. He ended a 27-event victory drought.
Lehman parred the first 11 holes before birdieing No. 12.
Triplett birdied the first, sixth, 13th and 16th holes in his bogey-free round. His approach on the final hole stopped in the back fringe. He missed a 20-foot birdie attempt.
Allen birdied three of the last four holes, with his approach on 18 hitting the flagstick and stopping 4 inches from the cup.
Doug Garwood was fourth at 13 under after a 66. He played the first 10 holes in 4 under and briefly grabbed a share of the lead at 13 under with an eagle on the 16th hole, but three-putted for bogey on the 17th to fall back.
Russ Cochran took advantage of a swing adjustment to shooting the best round of the tournament, an 8-under 64 that left him in a tie for sixth at 10 under.
"I got up on my toes more," Cochran said. "Seems like a little thing, but it seemed like it did the trick."
Colin Montgomerie was 10 under after a round of 70.
Hale Irwin matched his age with a 69 to tie for 39th at 3 under.

BETTER LATE THAN NEVER - A STORY WE MISSED LAST WEDNESDAY
McILROY SAYS HE WILL PLAY FOR
IRELAND, NOT GB AT 2016 OLYMPICS
After months of indecision over who to represent, Rory McIlroy has that he will play for Ireland — not Britain — at the 2016
Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.
The 25-year-old McIlroy, who is from Holywood, near Belfast in Northern Ireland, was eligible to
play for either Ireland or Team GB when golf makes its return to the
Olympics in Brazil for the first time since 1904.
Having played all of his amateur golf under the auspices of the
Dublin-based Golfing Union of Ireland, the two-time major winner opted
to stay with Ireland for the Olympics.
"I have been thinking about the decision a lot and remembered all the
times I represented Ireland as an amateur," McIlroy said
"I was always very proud to put on the Irish
uniform and play as an amateur and as a boy, and I would be very proud
to do it again."
Citizens of Northern Ireland, which is part of the United Kingdom, can
hold both British and Irish citizenship. Most of the Protestant majority
is British, most of its Catholic minority Irish.
McIlroy, while raised as a Catholic, grew up in the predominantly
Protestant town of Holywood east of Belfast and once said he considered
himself more British than Irish.
His 2012 comments — suggesting he might prefer to join the British team —
provoked strong ill feelings from Irish golf fans. McIlroy initially
said he might skip Rio entirely to avoid alienating fans further.
Two other top Northern Ireland golfers, Darren Clarke and McDowell, are Protestants who have identified with Ireland.
McIlroy has twice played in golf's World Cup for Ireland, both times alongside fellow Northern Irishman Graeme McDowell.
"Just because I'm getting paid to play this great game now doesn't mean I
should change (teams)," McIlroy said.
"So I'm very happy with my
decision. It means I can look forward to the Olympics in a couple of
years' time — you know, if I qualify, obviously, for the team.
"I just thought it was the right thing to do. It was the right time to
let everyone know. Now I'm really looking forward to Rio in '16."
McIlroy announced his decision ahead of next month's International Golf
Federation meeting that will finalize the eligibility criteria for the
2016 and 2020 Olympics.
"There's no point in delaying it and letting it linger any longer," he
said. "Watching the World Cup in Brazil, thinking about Brazil in a
couple of years' time, it just sort of got me thinking, maybe I should
just go ahead and get it out of the way."
Still, McIlroy said, winning an Olympic medal would not match winning a major championship.
"The majors in our sport are the biggest and best prizes in the game,"
he said. "But as hopefully golf grows in the Olympics and becomes, say,
bigger in four or five games down the line, then it might become
bigger."

HUGH HUNTER'S CLACKMANNAN COUNTY NEWS
MIXED PERFORMANCES FROM
CLACKMANNAN COUNTY GOLFERS
While the Clackmannan county teams have had a tough time in the national
competitions, finishing near the bottom of the 2014 Area team championship,
individual golfers have fared slightly better.
SCOTT BORROWMAN
(Dollar) started well with a high place finish in the Craigmillar Park 72 hole competition, then fell back with a
couple of missed cuts in the Scottish stroke play and St Andrews Links
Trophy.
At the weekend he returned to the
form that won the Order of Merit title in 2013 with a score of 285 (77, 72, 67,
69) to take fourth place in the Tennant Cup at Glasgow.
His 36 hole aggregate of 136 (67, 69) was the
best of the final day scores and had he not opened with a 77, then he would
probably have won the event.
Alva's LAWRENCE
ALLAN also had a good weekend at Glasgow, finishing 8th equal and
giving Wee County golfers two top ten placings. Prior to that, Lawrence made
the cut at the prestigious St Andrews Links event, finishing in 38th
position with a score of 291 (72, 71, 73, 75)
Top senior golfer BOB
STEWART (Tulliallan) has had the only national win so far for County golfers
when he took the West of Scotland Seniors title by three shots at Cardross with
an aggregate of 142 (71,71).
A fifth
place in the East of Scotland event has moved him up into the top ten in the
Seniors Order of Merit.
PAUL LAWRIE
FOUNDATION SCOTTISH SCHOOLS GOLF CHAMPIONSHIPS
While there were no
good performances from local boy golfers, Dollar’s Eilidh Watson had a fourth
place at Murrayshall last week with scores of 149 (75,74), taking the handicap
prize and helping the Forth Valley Girls team to a win in the Girls' Team event
by five shots over Aberdeen City.
JUNIOR GOLF DEVELOPMENT INITIATIVE AT ALLOA
With a decline in
numbers in some Junior Sections in Scotland, it is pleasing to see the
developments at local level in Clackmannanshire.
Most recent of these is at Alloa Golf Club
where a five-week programme supported by Clubgolf has had great success.
Masterminded by golf enthusiast Alan Didcock,
helped by a group of volunteer coaches, the initiative drew to a close last
week with a presentation of awards.
Alan
has been pleasantly surprised.
“The original group of youngsters who signed up
have stayed the course and seem committed to taking their golf forward this
summer," he said.
"Thanks must go to the support of
the parents, but particularly the coaches who survived a substantial training
programme, and gave their time willingly to enthuse the boys and girls.
"Hopefully these youngsters will take their game to higher
levels and achieve some success for Alloa Golf Club in the future”

KEY CRITERIA LISTED: VENUE ANNOUNCED IN AUTUMN 2015
2022 RYDER CUP VENUE: OFFICIAL
BIDDING PROCESS ANNOUNCED
BIDDING PROCESS ANNOUNCED
NEWS RELEASE
Ryder Cup Europe has today
announced the opening of the official Bidding Process for countries
wishing to host The 2022 Ryder Cup.
This will be the second time such
a process has been in place following the unqualified success to
determine the 2018 host. Then, the process drew bids from Germany,
Holland, Portugal, Spain and eventual winners France, who were unveiled
at a press conference at Wentworth Club in May 2011.
Ryder Cup Director Richard Hills
said: “The implementation of a formal bidding process for The 2018 Ryder
Cup marked a new era for Ryder Cup Europe.
The introduction of a fair,
transparent and objective methodology was one not only welcomed by all
participating countries, but one which also befitted a sporting event of
the stature of The Ryder Cup.
“We have carefully considered how
we might improve this process further and as a result, the timetable to
determine the 2022 host will be shorter and simpler whilst retaining
the level playing field approach.
"The key criteria in place enables us
to evaluate each bid equally on both its sporting and commercial merits
while, at the same time, allowing us to judge each bid fairly and
thoroughly.”
As with the 2018 process, all
bids must be channelled through national Golf Federations, Golfing
Unions or Central Government, and only one bid per country will be
accepted.
Countries must officially advise Ryder Cup Europe of their
intention to submit a bid by August 31st, 2014 and finalised bid dossiers will be required by February 16th 2015.
Following a period of detailed
analysis of each bid by a management team working on behalf of Ryder Cup
Europe, together with the assistance of an independent panel of
experts, the host country and venue for The 2022 Ryder Cup will be
announced in autumn 2015.
It is expected that bids will be
submitted from a wide range of countries whose players are eligible for
selection to the European Team and who are sure to benefit in a similar
manner to previous host countries from the unique sporting eminence of
The Ryder Cup.
KEY BID CRITERIA FOR THE 2022 RYDER CUP
- Demonstrable Government, Political, Institutional and Golfing Community support
- Commitment to the development of a world-class golf facility (new or existing) to host The 2022 Ryder Cup
- Provision of ancillary facilities, suitable access and infrastructure commensurate with the staging of an international sporting event, including proximity to a major international city
- Commercial opportunities available to The Ryder Cup
- Contribution of the Bid Country to the development of golf, for example:
- Legacy
- Contribution to the professional game
- Integration of golf within tourism and business communities
- Development of levels of golf participation
- Professional tournament golf at all levels
- Contribution to The Ryder Cup: eg Player eligibility and participation
