BUILD-UP TO THIS WEEK'S US PGA CHAMPIONSHIP
LOUISVILLE, Kentucky – South African Louis Oosthuizen won Tuesday’s long-drive competition, bombing his drive at the 10th hole 340 yards to edge Jason Day by two yards.
The PGA of America revived the competition for this year’s US PGA Championship, with competitors using their drives at the 10th hole during Tuesday’s practice rounds to determine the winner.
Adam Scott took the early lead, teeing off on the 10th hole at 7 a.m. with a 320-yard drive, and Gary Woodland held the lead for much of the day with a 330-yard attempt.
But Oosthuizen posted his drive late to take the title and a $25,000 donation that was split between a charity designated by the South African and the American Lakes Veterans Golf Course, a course designed to aid in the rehabilitation of wounded and disabled veterans.
“I thought it was a great addition. We all loved it. We all had fun with it,” Phil Mickelson said. “I thought it was terrific. I hope they keep doing it.”
And as for those who continue to lament the distance gains in golf in recent years, consider that Jack Nicklaus won the 1963 long-drive
