Slater only new cap in England team
for this week's European seniors

Philip Slater, a member of the Cheshire team that recently won the Northern Counties Seniors Championship, is the only new cap in the England squad for the European Men’s Seniors Team Championships to be played at Shannon Golf Club, County Clare, Ireland, starting on Wednesday.
The rest of what is an experienced six-man line-up is
Douglas Arnold, Gordon Broster, David Lane, Chris Reynolds and Alan Squires.
Slater, 57, made an impact in 2006, his first year as a senior, when he helped Cheshire retain the English Seniors County Championship at Lincoln Golf Club in Torksey when he scored 5.5 points from six matches.
In 2007, he won the Cheshire Seniors Championship and finished tied fifth in the Scottish Seniors, while he finished equal fourth the individual rankings when Cheshire won the recent Northern Counties qualifying at Fairhaven.
Arnold, 61, from Sussex, has won the English Seniors title on three occasions, the last at Yelverton in Devon in 2006. This year he finished tied third while he has represented England in the European Team Championships since it began two years ago and in every Seniors Home Internationals since its inception in 2002.
A member of the Copthorne club, he also lost a play-off for the European Seniors individual title in 2003, and is the current Sussex Seniors Champion.
Broster, 64, is recalled to international scene after earning caps in the Seniors Home Internationals in 2004 and 2005. He was then based in Devon, whom he represented in the 2006 county finals at Torksey, but is now a Cheshire player who lost a playoff to Slater for the county seniors title last year.
He was twice the South West Seniors Champion while in Devon and finished equal third in the 2004 Scottish Seniors Championship Lane, 67, is one of the top senior golfers in Europe. Like Arnold, he also has three English titles to his credit, the most recent coming at Enville last year, finished tied third this year, and was British Seniors champion in 1998.
The past BB&O President has also won the Scottish Seniors twice, the BB&O Seniors on nine occasions, the South East Seniors crown while, in the past year, he has added the Canadian and Portuguese Seniors titles to his impressive list.
Reynolds, 59, made his England debut in the 2006 Seniors Home Internationals in Scotland and helped his native Kent win the Seniors County Finals at Rotherham last year. He also finished runner-up to Lane in last year’s English Seniors Championship and was tied third this year. Reynolds is a man in form finishing runner-up in the Senior Open Amateur Championship at Royal Cinque Ports last week and producing the best round of the week with a 69.
Squires, 59, a past Lancashire Seniors champion, has played in the last four Seniors Home Internationals and well as the two previous European Seniors Team Championships. His record in the English Seniors Championship is impressive with two third places while he was joint runner-up in 2006.
When the inaugural European Men’s Seniors Team Championship was held in Finland, England finished third behind Scotland and Ireland, while last year in Slovenia they were third again as Ireland took the title.
