Seniors rookie Woosie in contention for
first win in Barbados Open

Welshman Ian Woosnam is in contention to land his maiden European Seniors Tour title after a dazzling display on the second day of the DGM Barbados Open.
A three-under-par round of 69 helped Woosnam – who owns a home on the Caribbean island – to a share of third place on 141, three shots behind the joint leaders, England’s Bob Cameron and Jamaica’s Delroy Cambridge.
Woosnam was joined on three under par by Italy’s Giuseppe Cali and Bill Longmuir of Scotland, who was one of many guests on Woosie’s catamaran last Sunday for the Welshman’s 50th birthday.
The 2006 Ryder Cup winning European team captain is suffering from a bad back, but played through the pain to post four birdies and a solitary bogey in blustery conditions at Royal Westmoreland Golf Club.
He said: “I’ve never known the wind to blow so hard out here – the course is playing like a links course. But I’m just grateful to be out there, because at the start of the week it was touch and go whether I would make it because of my back. I haven’t really thought about winning, but of course it would be nice.”
Woosnam’s round was bettered only by Cameron and Longmuir, who both carded 67s.
Next best Scot after Longmuir was Ross Drummond in joint 12th place on 145 after a second-round 74.
John Chillas improved from a 74 to 72 for 146.
