Press Release

JOHN SOMMERVILLE NAMED
AS SCOTTISH GOLF UNION
PRESIDENT FOR 2008

The Scottish Golf Union has named John Sommerville as the new SGU President for 2008. The announcement was made at the Annual General Meeting at the Tulliallan Police College.
John has a long-standing enthusiasm for golf spanning more than five decades - and has represented the South of Scotland Golf Association on the SGU since 1997, serving initially on the Golf Committee, and later on the Championship Committee after qualifying as an R&A Rules Official.
A former President (1985) and Secretary (1986) for the South region, John, pictured right, has also been a golf club member since 1942, firstly at Bothwell Castle and then Gatehouse Golf Club before joining Kirkcudbright, where he has previously served as Secretary and Captain of the club, and is still a current member.
More recently, he has played an active role in the development of SGU Golf Central in the South area.
Commenting on his new role, Mr Sommerville said, ‘I am both delighted and honoured to become the 46th SGU President and only the third representative from the South to be elected to the honorary position.
"I look forward to following the 2008 season with close interest and hope that during my tenure, the combined efforts of the SGU and all our prospective competitors will ensure an exciting year ahead, building upon the successes of recent years.''
The University of Glasgow graduate and former member of the Royal Regiment of Artillery was a Principle Teacher of Mathematics and Science at various education establishments before retiring. John, who recently celebrated his 76th birthday, hails from Motherwell and currently resides in Kirkcudbright with his wife Elma, also a graduate of the University of Glasgow.
Ian Ross steps into Mr Sommerville’s shoes as SGU vice-president for 2008, with Bert Leslie taking on the new role of SGU junior vice-president, to assist with duties to be fulfilled in the year ahead.
