SCOTTISH CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL
CRUDEN BAY TRIO WIN TITLE FOR SECOND TIME IN THREE YEARS
- NOW FOR CORFU
Cruden Bay’s Laurie Phillips, Ross Cooper and Michael Buchan won the Scottish club championship for the second time in three years in very wet conditions at Cowglen Golf Club, Glasgow today.
The scheduled 36-hole tournament was reduced to one round after a suspension of play for the best part of 2 ½ hr during the morning.
The same players (SGU picture shows Laurie Phillips left, Michael Buchan centre, Ross Cooper right) won the championship for Cruden Bay over two rounds at Erksine in 2004. This victory will send them to Corfu for the European club champion final from November 1 to 3.
Phillips was the cornerstone of the latest Buchan triumph with a round of 65 – five under the CSS. Michael Buchan and Ross Cooper gave him good support with scores of 70 and 71 respectively. Only two of the three scores could count, so Cruden Bay’s winning total was 135.
Glenbervie (Andrew Lynch, Murdo MacLeod and Tommy Wilson) were runners-up with 137.
Three teams finished on the 139 mark – Tulliallan, who were placed third, Glencorse fourth and Irvine fifth.
