SCOTS CORNER AT CLAYTON STATE
UNIVERSITY IN ATLANTA
Glasgow’s Neil McBride finished sixth in his first tournament of the new American college golf season. Neil, a second-year student at Clayton State University, Atlanta, had rounds of 69 and 76 for a total of three-over-par 145 in the Kiawah Island Invitational over a 6,817yd, par-72 course in South Carolina.
Team-mate Daniel Sommerville, recently enrolled from Madras College, St Andrews, finished joint 53rd in a field of 80 with a pair of 79s for 158.
Winner of the individual tournament was Baxter Culler (USC Upstate) with 67 and 70 for seven-under-par 137.
There are two other Scots on the Clayton State golf roster – Brendan McKenna and Conaill Scanlon. They are freshmen students and, like Neil McBride, former pupils of St Ninian’s High School, Glasgow.
Curiously enough, all four boys are six-footers.
