BRITISH BOYS CHAMPIONSHIP
FINDLAY WINS AGAIN BUT McALLISTER
IS STAR SCOTS PERFORMER ON DAY 2
Twice finalist Jordan Findlay holed a bunker shot in surging through to the third round of the British boys’ amateur golf championship at Balgownie yesterday.
But the star Scottish performance belonged to Shaun McAllister from Craigielaw. Recent surprise winner of the Scottish Under-18 boys’ open title, McAllister was five under par in beating a very highly rated Swedish player, Jesper Kennegard by 2 and 1.
Jesper has already been chosen to play for the Continent of Europe against Great Britain & Ireland in the boys’ international match early next month.
“I was fortunate I played my best golf of the season. In fact, it was unbelievable,” said Shaun. “I needed to play brilliantly because he is a great player. I feel a wee bit sorry for Jesper because if he had been playing anybody else today he would have won.
“I was five under par and only won on the 17th green, so he was several under par as well.”
McAllister won the first two holes with pars and then Kennegard hit him with a hat-trick of birdies from the third to go one up.
The Scot replied with an eagle 3 at the sixth to level the game. And so a classic match-play tie of real quality continued with a half in birdie 2s at the eighth.
A birdie was necessary to win a hole and Shaun got one at the long 12th to edge one up again. Then he birdied the 15th to double his lead before closing out the Swede with a couple of halves.
Jordan Findlay felt he played “much better” in beating Loretto Golf Academy pupil Tom Hayes (West Byfleet) by 2 and 1.
“I felt a lot more confident with my short game. I got up and down a few times and holed a 20yd bunker shot at the ninth for a birdie 3 to square the match,” said the Fraserburgh player who won this title two years ago and was beaten in the final 12 months ago.
Jordan did not really gain the upperhand on Hayes until he won the 12th, 13th and 15th with a birdie followed by two pars. That put Findlay three up and broke the back of the English lad's resistance.
