SCOTTISH WATERAID TOURNAMENT

KELLY WINS SCOTTISH WATERAID TITLE BY THREE

Chris Kelly, returning to Fife where he was brought up, led all the way over the 54 holes to win the top prize of £2,910 in the Scottish WaterAid professional tournament pro-am over the Torrance Course on a day of brilliant, warm sunshine at St Andrews Bay.
Kelly shot 65, 67 and 70 for a 14-under-par total of 202 to win by three shots from Chris Doak who scored 67, 70 and 68 for 205 and the £2,328 runner-up cheque.
Ross Drummond (Prestwick Driving Range) was Kelly's nearest challenger at the start of the final day, but he never really looked like making up the four-shot leeway, despite a birdie at the first. Ross - "I eventually lost confidence totally on the greens" - finished with 68, 68 and 74 to drop to eighth place on 210.
Kelly said later:
"It was the easiest scoring conditions of the three days but I didn't play nearly as well as I had done in the first two rounds. To be honest, it was a wee bit of a struggle to hang on to what I had. To finish with a bogey 6 after missing the green left was disappointing but, a win's a win and I can go up to the Northern Open with a bit of confidence."
Greig Hutcheon and Jason McCreadie (Buchanan Castle) tied for third place on eight-under-par 208, each earning £1,526.
McCreadie dropped two late shots in the rising breeze off the sea, at the 15th and 17th, after birdieing the eighth, ninth, 10th, 11th and 13th but he would not have caught Doak for the runner-up place..
The final-day pro-am was won by the the Byzack (Hamilton) team of Tony Cooker (18), Stuart Hamilton (14) and Alan Weir (4), piloted by Blairgowrie staff professional Stewart Whiteford who won the Scottish boys' championship at West Kilbride in 1996. The quartet combined for a 12-under-par 60.
