Day 1 Report: Scottish boys’ U14 Open Championship

By GRAHAM BARR
A sensational 10-under par round of 62 saw England’s Hugh Adams top the Scottish Boys’ U14 Open Championship leaderboard at Newmachar.

The Hagley Golf Club member (pictured left) made only one par on the front nine, with seven birdies and one bogey.  He then continued to add four further birdies on his bogey-free second nine.
Adams will now take a massive nine shot lead into tomorrow’s final round.
After signing his scorecard, Adams said, “That’s the best I’ve felt in a while, I’ve never shot 10-under before.
“To hole a 30-footer on the last as well, it’s just something I probably won’t experience again for a long time.  I started off with two nice birdies and the rest just happened.”
Elsewhere, top-Scot after Day 1 is Fortrose and Rosemarkie’s Jack Mann, who posted a oneunder par round of 71.
After his round, Mann said, “It was quite difficult out there but I played well, going out in three-under par obviously helped.
“This is actually the first time I’ve ever shot under par.  My best score ever before that had been one-over so that’s exciting.
“I’ll just try and go out tomorrow and do the exact same again, leaving myself in the same positions and hopefully holing some putts.”
Twelve-year-old Connor Graham from Blairgowrie also continued his fine form, posting an impressive opening round of 73 to finish the day on one-over par.
