Loretto U-16 Joy for Capelo: U-14 Wins for

Fenoglio and Critchley

Loretto Golf Academy Scottish Girls’ Under-16 and Under-14 Open Championship

Portugal’s Filipa Capelo was yesterday crowned the Loretto Golf Academy Scottish Girls’ Under-16 Open champion at Murrayfield, while England’s Ashleigh Critchley stormed to glory in the Under-14 Championship.

Capelo carded rounds of 77-72 for a total of 3-over par 149 to secure a one-shot victory from fellow countrywomen Leonor Medeiros and Prestwick St Nicholas’ Rachel Foster.

After her victory, a glowing Capelo said: “It feels amazing, it doesn’t feel real. This week was tough as the weather was challenging, but I enjoyed it and it feels incredible.”

In the Under-14 Championship, Ashleigh Critchley (Kettering Golf Club) produced some phenomenal golf in the 36-hole championship to blow the rest of the field away. Critchley finished on 5-under par, securing an eight-shot victory over closest challenger and fellow Englishwomen Rachel Gourley.

Critchley said: “It feels really good to get the win, it was a great event to play in here at Murrayfield. I struck the ball really well both days and delighted with my score.”

Gullane Golf Club’s Grace Crawford was the top Scot finishing in a share of seventh place, on eight-over par.

Loretto Golf Academy Scottish Boys’ Under-14 Open

Championship play-off won by Italian lad

Four miles along the road in Edinburgh, Italy’s Pietro Guido Fenoglio overcame France’s Maxence Giboudot in a play-off to win the Loretto Golf Academy Scottish Boys Under-14 Open Championship at Turnhouse Golf Club.

After 36-holes, both players were tied on six-under par and the title was finally settled on the second play-off hole when a par on the 9th hole was good enough for Fenoglio to claim the victory.

The jubilant Italian said: “I can’t believe it right now, I am so happy. I played really well and the course was fantastic. I have really enjoyed my experience playing in the Scottish wind. In the playoff, I just focused on my game. If you win then great, if you lose, don’t worry.”

Italy’s Flavio Michetti finished in sole third place on one-under par, with Ayr Belleisle’s Ruben Lindsay finishing top Scot, in a share of fourth place on one-over par, tied with Englishman Max Shirvell.

Under-12 Division

It was an England one-two in the Under-12 division, with Chiara Noja (Sandy Lodge Golf Club) winning the girls’ title and Daniel Hayes (Bramhall Golf Club) victorious in the boys’ event.
