Somerset pro Dixon shoots low round of 51 for victory

BOGEY-BOGEY FINISH COSTS GRAY SCOTTISH PAR 3 TITLE

By COLIN FARQUHARSON

A bogey-bogey finish cost Stephen Gray (Lanark) victory in the Aberdeen Standard Investments Scottish par-3 championship at the Paul Lawrie Golf Centre on the South Deeside Road, Aberdeen today (Friday).
On a day when there was only a slight breeze instead of Thursday's half-gale, Gray, the halfway leader by two strokes in the 36-hole event, looked to be holding off the challenge of Somerset-based pro David Dixon for the title and a cheque for £3,750.

But Gray could manage only bogey 4s at the last two holes to finish with scores of 52 and 54 for a two-under-par total of 106.
Dixon, pictured, bogeyed the fifth but covered his last 13 holes in four under par with 2s at the sixth, eighth, 11th, 13th and 16th, his only last-round bogeys coming at the fifth and 18th in rounds of 54 and 51 for three-under 105.
Dixon's three-under-par 51 was the joint lowest round of the tournament (matched only by Grantown on Spey's Gavin Hay), at a venue over which he had not even played a practice round when he stood on the first tee on Thursday.
He received a personal invitational from Lawrie about a fortnight ago to play in the par-3 tournament.
At 41, he has been a pro since 2001, turning pro after winning the silver medal as leading amateur in the Open that year. He won the Lytham Trophy in 2000 and has scored one win on the European Tour
Craig Lawrie (Paul Lawrie Golf Centre), elder son of 1999 Open champion Paul Lawrie, the host for this tournament, finished third with scores of 55 and 54 for 109.
Heather MacRae (Elite Golf Academy) finished as the leading lady in joint seventh place with scores of 59 and 54 for 113.
The pairs team event was won by Newmachar tour pro Greg McBain and his amateur partner Ricky Sturrock with a score of 94 - two ahead of Stuart Wilson (Portlethen) and Alan McPhee, with Dixon and Aboyne amateur David Nelson third on 97.
