USA extend Curtis Cup lead to 7-2 over GB and I

Americans are simply out-putting GB and I on Tillinghast's quirky greens

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
The United States are odds-on favourites to win back the Curtis Cup after winning Day 2's morning four-ball session 3-0 which extended their overall lead from 4-2 at the end play yesterday evening to 7-2 with the afternoon foursomes to come today before Sunday's closing session of eight singles.
With 20pt at stake over the three-day match,  the USA have to reach 10.5pt to be in a "defeat impossible" position.
Designer Tillinghast's quirky greens - no straight putts on undulating surfaces that twist this way and then that way - have made this biennial match a putting contest … and the Americans are clearly out-putting the GB and I players.
In this morning's session, USA notched 12 birdies to only four by the GB and I team.
+Several years ago after Great Britain and Ireland had lost yet another Ryder Cup match to USA, no less a person than Jack Nicklaus suggested that a "European" team would be a much stronger one than a GB and I only line-up and would, consequently, provide much worthier opposition.
His suggestion was accepted - and he was right.
I will not be very popular when I say that perhaps it is time for the Curtis Cup match to feature Team Europe rather than GB and I against the USA.
