Newmachar chalked up a resounding nine-hole win over Royal Aberdeen in this evening's final of the Maitland Shield double foursomes tournament at Deeside Golf Club.
Recent Phillips Trophy winner Chris Lamb and John Ross finished six up on Mark Halliday and Donald Macandrew in the lead-off singles tie. Lamb and Ross never looked back after going one up at the third. By the turn they had increased their lead to three holes and they doubled that on the inward half.
Calvin Cheyne and Jamie Wilson finished three up on Nick Macandrew and Craig Leith after being two up at the turn.
Newmachar thus regained the trophy they last won in 2015 and before that in 2006.
Royal Aberdeen's lean spell in this tournament, of which this was the 102nd staging, dates back to 2003-2004 when the Balgownie team won the Maitland Shield two years in a row.
Next year's Maitland Shield tournament will be hosted by Auchmill Golf Club.
The tournament is sponsored by Molly's Bistro and Malone's Irish Bar at the Douglas Hotel, Market Street in Aberdeen.
+The Maitland Shield takes its name from Adam Maitland who was Lord Provost of Aberdeen round about the time of World War I (1914-18).
