 Olivia Mehaffey sets pace at Darius Rucker Intercollegiate with a 66

DUKE UNIVERSITY NEWS RELEASE 
HILTON HEAD, South Carolina – Paced by rounds of 71 and 72 by freshman Jaravee Boonchant and senior Leona Maguire, the fifth-ranked Duke women’s golf team opened action at the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate Friday morning at the 6,160-yard, par 71 Pete Dye Course at the Long Cove Club. 
 
Alabama kicked off action with a two-over, 286, Friday and leads the team standings, while Northwestern (287), Arkansas (290), LSU (291), Furman (292), Mississippi State (292), Arizona State (293), North Carolina (293), Georgia (294), Duke (295) and Vanderbilt (295) rounding out the top 10 teams. 
 
Boonchant, who hails from Bangkok, Thailand, enters the second round tied 10th overall, after carding three birdies on the afternoon.  She opened Friday with birdies on No. 1 and No. 5 on her way to jumping out to an early 2-under-par lead on the individual leaderboard.  Boonchant suffered bogeys on the seventh and 11th holes to drop to even par.  She went back in the red numbers with a birdie on the 379-yard, par four 12th.  On the way in, she had a bogey on No. 17 to finish at one-over. 
 
A two-time National Player of the Year, Maguire opened play with bogeys on the third and sixth holes to fall to two-over-par.  She responded with back-to-back birdies on No. 7 and No. 8 to get to even par.  After a bogey on No. 11, she was able to get back to even with her third birdie of the day on the 530-yard, par five 15th.  Maguire, who is from Cavan, Ireland, had a bogey on No. 16 along with two pars on 17 and 18 to finish the day.  She hit 15 greens, 11 fairways and had 34 putts on the day. 
 
Both senior Lisa Maguire and freshman Miranda Wang signed for five-over-par, 76, in the first round and are tied 53rd overall.  After opening the first 10 holes at seven-over, Maguire had the best finish of the day for Duke as she closed with a two-under ledger over the final eight holes.  A native of Cavan, Ireland, Maguire featured birdies on No. 11 and No. 15. 
 
Wang was three-over in her first four holes, but settled down to play her final 14 holes at three-over-par.  She had one birdie on the day on the 520-yard, par five sixth. 
 
Sophomore Ana Belac had one of the best starts to the day with an even-par score through nine holes, but struggled on the back nine with a six-over, 41.  She concluded the round with a six-over, 77.  Belac, who is from Portoroz, Slovenia, rolled in her lone birdie of the day on No. 7 from eight feet.  She hit 12 fairways, 11 greens and had 34 putts. 
 
Arizona State’s Olivia Mehaffey opened action with a five-under 66, to lead the individual race. The GB and I Curtis Cup player from Northern Ireland covered the first nine holes in five-under-par 31
 
Duke will tee off Saturday in the second round beginning at 10:10 a.m., along with Vanderbilt and Wake Forest.
