Second-Round Lead Notes

Since 2000, the 36-hole leader/co-leader at this event has gone on to win seven times, including four of the last five winners: Jordan Spieth/2017, Brandt Snedeker/2015/2013, Jimmy Walker/2014, Dustin Johnson/2010, Phil Mickelson/2007/2005.

Dustin Johnson

World No. 1 and two-time Pebble Beach Pro-Am winner Dustin Johnson opened with three consecutive birdies at Monterey Peninsula CC. After a bogey at his sixth hole (No. 15), Johnson produced five additional birdies for a 7-under 64 and a share of the 36-hole lead with Beau Hossler at 12-under.
Of the nine times Johnson has played Monterey Peninsula CC, Friday’s 7-under 64 marks his best performance at this course by four strokes. This was just the third time Johnson has managed to break 70 at MPCC (2010/68, 2015/69).
This marks the 14th 36-hole lead/co-lead for Johnson on the US PGA Tour. He’s gone on to win seven times in the previous 13 times. Johnson’s most recent 36-hole lead/co-lead came at the WGC-HSBC Champions where he went on to finish T2 after shooting a final-round 77.
Johnson is a two-time winner of the Pebble Beach Pro-Am with back-to-back victories in 2009 and 2010. He owns five additional top-10 finishes in 10 previous starts at this event (T7-2008, Won-2009, Won-2010, T5-2012, T2-2014, T4-2015, 3-2017).
Johnson is in search of his 18th US PGA Tour victory. After four wins in the 2016-17 season, Johnson extended his winning streak on the PGA TOUR to 11 consecutive seasons with victory at the 2018 Sentry Tournament of Champions.
Johnson is making his third start of the 2017-18 US PGA Tour season. Along with the victory in Maui, Johnson tied for second at the World Golf Championships-HSBC Champions where he posted a final-round 77 to relinquish a six-stroke lead after 54 holes.

Beau Hossler

First-year US Tour professional Beau Hossler produced his second consecutive bogey-free round, a 5-under 67 at Spyglass Hill to retain a share of the lead he also held after the opening round. This marks the first time Hossler has held the 36-hole lead/co-lead on the US Tour.
Hossler made his first professional start in golf at the 2016 TaylorMade Pebble Beach Invitational, where he finished T9.
In his only other start at the Pebble Beach Pro-Am, Hossler missed last year’s cut.
On the Tour this season, Hossler is making is 10th start, having missed just one cut (Sony Open in Hawaii). His best finish is a T7 at the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open.

Troy Merritt

Troy Merritt fired a second consecutive 67 to sit at 10-under through 36 holes. Merritt’s opening round at Pebble Beach on Thursday included three bogeys on his inward nine but Friday’s round at Spyglass Hill was bogey-free.
Merritt has made six previous appearances in the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, failing to advance to Sunday’s final round each time.
Merritt finished No. 151 in the FedExCup last season but secured his PGA TOUR card for 2017-18 by finishing 13th in the Web.com Tour Finals money list late last year. The PGA TOUR winner (2015 The National) has made just three cuts in eight starts this season with a T51 at the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open his best result.

Julian Suri

Playing on a sponsor invite, Jacksonville, Florida native Julian Suri fired a 4-under 67 at Monterey Peninsula CC, including five birdies and a lone bogey at his penultimate hole (No. 17) to sit T3 at 10-under.
Suri, who is ranked No. 66 in the Official World Golf Ranking, is making his fourth career start on the US PGA Tour. Most recently, he missed the cut at last week’s Waste Management Phoenix Open. He finished T63 at the Farmers Insurance Open while playing on the first of three consecutive starts as a sponsor invite.
Despite playing only a partial European Tour season in 2017, Suri won the Made In Denmark tournament and finished 52nd in the Road to Dubai.
In addition to his win in Denmark on the European Tour, Suri finished solo-second at the Open de Portugal Morgado in his first start of the season on that Tour.
Suri ended his 2017 European Tour season with three-consecutive T8 finishes last autumn

Additional Player Notes

Making his 22nd career start at Pebble Beach, four-time Pebble Beach Pro-Am winner Phil Mickelson posted a bogey-free 6-under 65 at Monterey Peninsula to move into contention at 9-under par, four off the lead. It’s Mickelson’s seventh round of 65 or better at this event (79 rounds).

World No. 2 Jon Rahm followed an opening-round 67 at Monterey Peninsula CC with a 5-under 67 at Pebble Beach to sit T5 at 9-under. In his last two starts on the US PGA Tour before this week, he combined for a 23-under total on the par-5s. In his last three rounds (final round of the Waste Management Phoenix Open and rounds one and two of the AT and T Pebble Beach Pro-Am), Rahm is just 2-under on the par-5s.

First-round co-leader Kevin Streelman posted a 2-under 69 at Monterey Peninsula CC to sit T5 at 9-under. He joins Beau Hossler as the only two players who remain bogey-free through 36 holes.

Defending champion Jordan Spieth birdied five of his first seven holes at the Monterey Peninsula CC on his way to a 5-under 67 and now sits T23. Spieth began the second round in T98 after shooting even-par 72 at Spyglass Hill on Thursday. Spieth, an AT and T-sponsored athlete, is making his sixth start in the Pebble Beach Pro-Am. He has finished inside the top 25 in every start, highlighted by three top-10s (2014/T4, 2015/T7 and 2017/1st). He finished T22 in 2013 and T21 in 2016.

Making his first start at the Pebble Beach Pro-Am and first of the 2017-18 US PGA Tour Season, Rory McIlroy required FIVE putts for a double-bogey six after driving the green at the par-4 fifth hole at Monterey Peninsula CC. His 3-over 74 leaves McIlroy at 1-under in T87 position. Last month, McIlroy finished T3 at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship and 2nd at the Omega Dubai Desert Classic. McIlroy is playing with his father, Gerry, this week.
