Renfrewshire Boys
Golf Team continued the defence of the West League Title with a 5 – 3 win away against
Glasgow at Haggs Castle Golf Club on Sunday 6th August.
This result
maintains their position at the top of the league.
The course was in
great condition despite the recent wet weather, but some of the boys found the
going a bit tough reflected in the scores..
The Renfrewshire team
showed a couple of changes from the last match with both the two unbeaten
players Cammy Johnstone and Aidan O’Hagan unavailable together with Greg
McCaffer.
The games mostly
started the way that they would finish with those who were up early on
maintaining that advantage with virtually no signs of recovery from any of their
opponents.
Jonny Murphy was
first to fall not finding his game at all and going down by 6/5.
Recovery was
quick however with Timmy Erskine making his first appearance this year playing
steady golf and running out a comfortable winner by 6/4.
Roddy McAuley was
back to his best after his disappointing performance in the last match and was
comfortable in his 6/4 victory.
Josh Greer
playing for the County for the first time had a bit of a struggle but came
through in the end winning on the 17th having seemed well in control
earlier on when 3 up after 9.
Euan English
brought into the team for his first game this year never really got going and
struggled with his game against a solid opponent and went out quietly by 5/4.
Aiden Reid
playing on what was his home course until this year was very disappointing,
starting his match with a snap hook off the first tee, lost ball, and never
recovered and went down easily by 7/6.
Undefeated Euan
McNeill maintained his impressive record this year, despite trying to give the
managers palpitations, 3 up with 5 to play he lost 3 in a row and was all
square with 2 to play, solid half at 17, and when his opponent failed to get a
par at 18 he won the match with a solid par for a 1 hole victory.
In the top game
Ibrahim Hussain, having travelled up from Manchester for the match, and despite
a three-putt at the first, quickly got into his stride. He was in no mood to give
anything away to his opponent and proved his worth with a comfortable 6 and 5 win.
The match, as
always, was again played in a very sporting manner
