A series of dramatic 18-hole finishes gave England a 4-1 lead over Scotland after the morning foursomes on the first day of the Men’s Home Internationals at Moortown, Leeds in Yorkshire.
First, Matthew Jordan and Gian-Marco Petrozzi got up and down from the back of the green to halve their game. “It was a pretty fitting result,” said Petrozzi. “It was a great match with three eagles and a lot of birdies.”
Then new English amateur champion Todd Clements holed out from the greenside bunker for a winning birdie, which was warmly applauded by playing partner Dan Brown. “It was a really tight match,” said Clements. “They eagled the 7th to go 2up and then we kicked into gear with birdies on eight, 10, 12, 17 and 18.”
In the next game Jack Gaunt holed a 40ft birdie putt for a 1-up win in his game, in partnership with David Hague. “We’d missed a couple out there and walking up the last fairway I said we were due one here,” said Gaunt.
Earlier Josh Hilleard and Will Whiteoak had romped to a 5 and 4 victory and finally Jake Burnage and Bradley Moore managed a half in their game to keep the team unbeaten in the first session.
Hilleard and Whiteoak played solid, sub-par golf and were six up at one point during their game. Burnage and Moore had been up in the early stages of their game before losing 13, 14 and 15 to go one down. In a fighting finish they won 17 and halved 18.
In the morning’s other match Wales hold a 3-2 lead over the defending champions, Ireland.
The Irish were first to put points on the board, with wins by Paul McBride and Conor O’Rourke (4 and 3) and by Alex Gleeson and Lester Rowan (3 and 2).
But Wales took the other three points: Matthew Harris and Lewis Sanges were always in front and won 2 and 1; Ben Chamberlain and Tim Harry were all square for much of their match but moved ahead over the closing holes, also winning 2 and 1; Llewellyn Matthews and Jake Hapgood were quickly two up and stayed that way through most of their match before winning 3 and 1.
