Matthew Clark leads Tennant Cup after two rounds

Matthew Clark leads Tennant Cup after

two rounds at Glasgow Gailes

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Two par rounds of 72 would not normally lead the Tennant Cup at the halfway stage but Kilmacolm's Matthew Clark, the defending champion,  showed his skill in very windy afternoon conditions by doing just that at Glasgow Gailes, which earned him the pole position by one shot from Fraser Davren (Williamwood) (75-70) with Sunday's two rounds at Killermont to come.

Clark, pictured, and his young challenger had contrasting inward halves in their second rounds.
Clark was three over par for his last seven holes, bogeying the 12th, 16th and 18th for 37 home.
Davren, a student at Eastern Florida State University, cut into his deficit by being two under par for his last 10 holes, finishing strongly with birdies at the 14th and 17th.
After the first round, it was Calum Fyfe (Cawder) and Chris Maclean (Balmore) in first and second positions with rounds of 68 and 69 respectively but as the wind rose so did their scores.
Fyfe had a 68 and Maclean a 77 and they are joint third on 146, by no means out of it ... depending on the strength of the wind, if any!
George Duncan (Windyhill), who will be defending the Scottish amateur championship later this summer, is sharing sixth place on 151 after steady rounds of 75 and 76.
A total of 45 players with 36-hole tallies of 160 and better qualified for Sunday's final two rounds at Glasgow Killermont.
