Liam Johnston shares lead on 66 in South

African stroke-play championship

Liam Johnston (Dumfries and County) is in a three-way tie for the lead with a four-under-par 66 in the first round of the South African men's open amateur stroke-play championship at Kingswood Golf Estate.

Johnston, pictured, had five birdies - at the fifth, eighth, ninth, 11th and 12th - in halves of 32 and 34. He bogeyed the 14th.
Sharing the lead are Frenchman Edgar Catherine and Phillip Swanepoel (South Africa).
There are two Scots in the top 20 with Craig Ross sharing 18th place on one-under 69. He had three birdies and two bogeys.
Craig Howie and Jamie Stewart are joint 30th with 70s. Both had three birdies and three bogeys.
Eric McIntosh (75), Calum Fyfe (75) and Sam Locke (77) did not fare so well and are outwith the leading 100 in a field of 144 players.
McIntosh had two birdies but also two double bogeys while  Fyfe followed and eagle 2 at the par-4 13th with a quadruple bogey 8 at the 15th.
Locke had a doube bogey 6 at the first and a triple bogery 7 at the seventh. He had one birdie.
