Langer wins Hawaii seniors' tournament

Bernhard Langer opened the 2017 US seniors' season with a win, capturing the Mitsubishi Electric Championship at Hualalai, Hawaii by a single shot Saturday. The German beat out Fred Couples for the victory.
Brutal conditions faced players for Saturday’s final round, as winds whipping at 40+ miles per hour came into play. At one point, the day’s scoring average was over 80. Ultimately, though, the windy conditions were deemed to make the course unplayable, and with no end to the bad forecast in sight, the round had to be scrapped. An additional poor forecast for Sunday ensured the event was shortened from 54 to 36 holes.
That earned Langer the victory, as he stood in front of the pack at 15 under through 36 holes. Couples finished at 14 under following consecutive 65s, with Kirk Triplett solo third at 13 under and David Toms, making his PGA Tour Champions debut, among a quartet that tied for fourth at 12 under.
Langer, 59, now has 30 victories on PGA Tour Champions, making him second alone on the all-time wins list behind Hale Irwin (who owns 45 titles).
“(This win is) very special because it’s maybe my favourite tournament out here,” Langer said. “To start the year off in this fashion, just winning the Schwab Cup last year and now my caddie’s wearing the Schwab Cup jersey again, it can’t be much better. And then to have won on the day when we celebrate our 33rd anniversary, I have my kids and my wife (Vikki) with me, that doesn’t happen very often. It’s quite emotional for me, pretty neat.”
Langer is a four-time winner of the season-long Charles Schwab Cup and has captured the last three. This win makes it 11 straight years Langer has at least one victory in a US PGA Tour Champions season.
After a promising opening 65, John Daly faded in Round Two at Hualalai. The 50-year-old followed up with a 73 to finish 6 under and drop 19 spots to a tie for 23rd.
Colin Montgomerie tied for 13th place on 135 with rounds of 68 and 67.
Paul Broadhust tied for 20th place with scores of 68 and 69 for 137.
