Men's Amateur highlight at Nairn Golf Club next week

Champion Duncan IS selected for Home

Internationals but beaten finalist Burgess is not

FROM THE SCOTTISH GOLF WEBSITE
Newly-crowned Scottish men’s amateur champion George Duncan and GB and I cap Graeme Robertson have secured Scotland call-ups for next week’s Fairstone Home Internationals at The Nairn Golf Club.
Windyhill’s Duncan, who achieved the biggest win of his career following an impressive week at Royal Aberdeen, will make his Scotland debut in the annual four nations event, while Robertson, one of the country’s most consistent performers in recent years, will make his sixth straight appearance when the action gets underway at the former Walker Cup venue on Wednesday 10 August.

In recent years, Robertson has proved a key player for Scotland, having formed a successful foursomes partnership with Jack McDonald.
Duncan, 21, has climbed to eighth place on the Scottish Golf Men’s Order of Merit following his victory in the north-east, while Glenbervie man Robertson is 10th having reached the last-16 at Royal Aberdeen.
The two players complete Scotland’s 11-man side for the contest in the Highlands, after nine players were selected late last month.
With Grant Forrest, Ewen Ferguson, Connor Syme and Robert MacIntyre all qualifying for the US Amateur Championship by virtue of being inside the top 50 on the World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR), they are unable to compete at Nairn.
Home member Sandy Scott was thus the only automatic qualifier for the team (from the top five Scots on the WAGR and the top two players on the Men’s Order of Merit), meaning 10 further selectors’ picks have been chosen.
Scotland will seek to win the Fairstone Home Internationals at Nairn for the first time since they last hosted the matches at Glasgow Golf Club’s Gailes Links in 2012.
Steve Paulding, Scottish Golf Performance Director, said: “We’re delighted to add George and Graeme to a Scotland team which now boasts a great blend of youth and experience.
“George is a player in form, having handled the pressure extremely well to come out on top of a very strong field at Royal Aberdeen last week, while Graeme has a great track record for his country and will add his considerable experience to the team.
“It will be a great test for the players to compete against some of the best players from the other home countries over such a fantastic and challenging course and I’m sure they’ll all relish the occasion.”
Entry to the Fairstone Home Internationals is free of charge for spectators, with the event taking place from 10 – 12 August.
Live scoring will be featured on scottishgolf.org, with a daily highlights package shown on Scottish Golf’s social media channels, thanks to support from The R and A. The Home internationals is being sponsored by Fairstone Financial Management, the UK’s largest Chartered Financial Planning firm, for the fourth consecutive year.

Forrest leads the Scots in Estonia

Walker Cup player Grant Forrest (North Berwick) is the leading Scot after the first round of the European men's individual amateur championship in Estonia.
Considering the lack of a practice round and the disappearance of their own golf clubs in transit, Forrest and his fellow Scots did very well. Grant shot a three under par 69 to be in joint 13th position, three shots behind the leader, Germany's Jeremy Paul.
Craig Ross had a 70 for a share of 27th place while Connor Syme (Drumoig) and Craig Howie (Peebles) were joint 44th with 71s.

Fraser and Bell in the Seniors' mix at Formby

By ELSPETH BURNSIDE
John Fraser, the Royal Burgess Society captain, and Downfield’s Graham Bell were just a shot off the lead after the first round of the Seniors Amateur Championship at Formby, Lancashire
American Randy Haag and Swede Stefan Lindberg shared the top spot on 71, five better than the defending champion, Patrick Tallent.
Fraser, who played shinty for Newtonmore in his youth, had four birdies and four bogeys in a 72 and Bell had three birdies and three bogeys.
Both have played for the Scotland senior amateur team, and are aiming to end a run of six successive American winners of the title.
“I didn’t really play golf seriously at all before the seniors,” said Fraser, who is a former head teacher at Craigmount High School in Edinburgh.
Bell is a many times Downfield and Camperdown Club Champion. “I was pleased with the score,” he said. “It was a really tough day. Once you got out towards the seas the wind was gale force. Really brutal.”
Haag has twice won the top amateur prize - the silver medal - at the British Senior Open. He claimed the honour at Carnoustie in 2010 and again the following year at Walton Heath.
But he was distraught 12 months ago at this Championship at Royal County Down when a mix-up over a storm delay led to his premature exit.
“I played two holes before the weather stopped play,” explained the six-time North Californian Player of the Year. “I went back to my hotel and when I called about the restarting time I misunderstood the information.
“The next call was from the R and A to tell me I had been disqualified. It was the most miserable feeling. So I am very excited to be back over here again.”
Before his trip to the UK, Haag won a qualifying event for the US Seniors’ Open, and his impressive form continued with “one of the best ball striking rounds of my life.”
He hit 17 greens in the tricky conditions, and could have shot even lower if he had fared better on the greens. He accumulated 36 putts.
Lindberg opened with two birdies in the first three holes - he nearly eagled the long third - and had a strong finish with more gains at the 15th and 17th.
The Helsingborg golfer missed last year’s Championship due to a back injury, but now he is fully fit and ready to try and emulate Open Champion Henrik Stenson and become a Swedish winner on a British links this summer.
Moor Park’s John Ambridge joined Fraser and Bell on 72. He was in the same Hertfordshire teams as Nick Faldo and Ken Brown and qualified as an amateur to play in two Open Championships.
The highlight of his round was a chip-in eagle at the long 17th. His putt for birdie and a tie for the lead lipped out at the last.

Hutch wins Deer Park Masters by one

as he drops down a gear

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Greig Hutcheon virtually scored another victory in the Deer Park Masters with his first round of eight-under-par 64 on Tuesday. The Paul Lawrie Golf Centre Inchmarlo man's second-round 72, admittedly in more difficult conditions, was not out his top drawer and an eight-under-par aggregate of 136 just got him across the winning line at the Livingston venue by a one-stroke margin from Paul O'Hara (Clydeway Golf) who had scores of 66 and 71.
Daniel Wood (Hirsel) took third place with 70 and 69 for 139.
But a win is a win and first prize of £2,520 plus a bundle of Order of Merit points will ease Greig's disappointment at not continuing in the same vein of form as he tapped into on Monday.
O'Hara earned £1,739 and Wood £1,372.
The lowest round of the day came from Aberdonian Scott Henderson (Kings Links) with a 68 for 143 which saw him finish in joint eighth place and earn £490. Highlight of his card was an eagle 3 at the long second. He also had four birdies.

Gough’s 67 sets the pace
 at Reid Trophy
England's Conor Gough set the first round pace in the Reid Trophy with a score of three-under 67 on a drizzly day at Porters Park Golf Club in Hertfordshire.
The 13-year old heads an international leaderboard in the English U14 boys' open championship, with players from the Czech Republic, Spain, France and Ireland among those in the top 10.
But Gough, from Stoke Park in Buckinghamshire, is leading a strong English challenge. Closest to him is Luis Witherall from Cherwell Edge in Northamptonshire, who beat par in competition for the first time today with his 69.
Cheshire’s Oscar Doran (Delamere Forest) shares third place on level par while Dominic Clemons from Gog Magog in Cambridgeshire shot one-over 71 and is in a group of five sharing seventh place.
Gough (Image © Leaderboard Photography) set the standard early in the day with a round which included four birdies and just one bogey. “I'm very pleased, I was hoping for about level par, so this is much better - but it's only the first round," he said.
He came into this event in fine form, having just won the U15 Douglas Johns Trophy by three shots and finished in the top 10 at last month’s English U16 championship for the McGregor Trophy.
Today, he started on the 10th and got off to a quick start with two birdies in his first three holes. After a steady string of pars he got to three-under on the first, a short par four of 254 yards where his drive with a three wood went 30 yards through, but his chip back finished within a foot of the hole. Another birdie on the fourth - where he holed from 25ft - got him to four under, but a wayward drive which finished in the trees on the seventh cost him his only bogey.
Witherall came in towards the end of the day with his 69, remarking: “I was hitting greens and two-putting most of the time, but when I missed the greens I got up and down a lot. I kept my head after a bad shot and just moved on from it.”
He has worked hard towards this event and added: “I’ve been practising really hard for this and today it’s paid off.”
Cheshire's Oscar Doran (Delamere Forest) is in a group of four players who scored level par 70 today, putting together a remarkably steady round. He started with birdies on the first and second and then had 13 straight pars before dropping a couple at the end of his round.
“I finished bogey, par, bogey which was quite disheartening, but I'll take level par," said Doran who is the Cheshire U14 and U16 champion.
Good driving was the key to his scoring and when he did hit a wayward one into the trees on 17 he still had the answer, hooking his second around the trouble and onto the green to set up a par.
Among the others sharing third place is Casey Jarvis of South Africa, who has made the trip to play this event and the Scottish U14 championship and has arrived in good form. He matched five birdies with bogeys and said afterwards: “I’m happy overall. I wanted to be in contention going into the second round.
“I played pretty well/ I missed a few greens on the back nine but I was hitting my driver really well and my putting was good. The rain was difficult at one point but I played my way through it.”
After tomorrow’s second round the field of 144 competitors will be cut to the leading 70 players and ties who will play the final 18 holes on Thursday.

. Lanarkshire match-play quarter-finals

Dominic Dougan beat young Jack Emerson of East Kilbride by 6 and 5 and was four under par for the match at Hamilton Golf Club. Jack had a few birdies earlier on but Dominic’s experience began to tell.
Ed Wood played steadily throughout to beat Stewart Henderson 3 and 2. Gordon Yates had to birdie the last hole to get the better of local player Craig Borland by one hole.
In the final match Hamilton greenkeeper Brian Scott staged a late rally to beat Kenny Gallacher at the last hole. Brian birdied the 14th and 16th to edge one ahead but looked like losing the last when he was 20 yards through the green with his approach and Kenny was safely on the green. However a superb pitch into the hole  brought an abrupt end to the match!
Semi-finals are tomorrow at 5.30 again at Hamilton Golf Club.
Results:
Dominic Dougan      Airdrie   bt      Jack Emerson  East Kilbride  6 and 5.
