Rory McIlroy back in form with a 64

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Florida – No one ever won the Players Championship on a Friday, but Rory McIlroy surely won some sort of battle with his 8-under 64 in the second round today.
The Ulsterman hit 10 of 14 fairways, 13 of 18 greens in regulation, and took just 22 putts compared to 30 while shooting a disappointing even-par 72 the day before.
He also shot under par on the front nine—his second nine Friday—for just the second time.
Simply put, he was in command. Still, he was a bit glum afterward.
"I'm disappointed," McIlroy said. "It should have been a couple better. Instead of being two behind the lead I feel like I should be tied for the lead."
With a chance to birdie the par-5 ninth hole, his last of the day, and shoot a course-record 62, McIlroy dumped his 90yd approach shot in the heavy rough short of the green and bogeyed the hole. That left him two behind co-leaders Jonas Blixt (67) and Alex Cejka (67) with much of the afternoon wave yet to tee off.

Wilcox has hole in one at Sawgrass 17th!

Surrounded by some of the most famous water in golf, Will Wilcox ended one of the sport's more curious droughts.
With a pitching wedge from 147 yards, Wilcox carded a hole-in-one on the 17th hole at TPC Sawgrass, just the seventh there in Players Championship history since moving to this course in 1982.
Even more bizarre is that it had been 14 years since Miguel Angel Jimenez had the last ace on this hole during the tournament -- a span of more than 6,300 tee shots.
Upon holing his tee shot using a yellow ball, Wilcox exuberantly pumped his fist and celebrated with his caddie and playing partners. As he walked toward the green, he high-fived seemingly every spectator within arm's reach.
It was the first hole-in-one for Wilcox in his US PGA Tour career. There have now been 22 aces on the US PGA Tour during the 2015-16 season.
MORE SECOND-ROUND NEWS
Adam Scott bounced back from a quadruple bogey at the 18th in Round 1 to shoot a 65 in Round 2.The Aussie is on 138.

Sergio Garcia is on 138 after a 66.

Leader Jason Day has an afternoon starting time in the second round.

Dustin's kid brother caddie saves him two-shot penalty

Dustin Johnson had his little brother to thank for avoiding a two-shot penalty after a bizarre incident on the fourth hole at TPC Sawgrass.
Johnson slipped to five under for The Players Championship on day two after a bogey 6 at the second, and he found the green safely at the fourth before causing himself a big problem after marking his ball.
He intended to toss his ball to caddie and younger brother Austin, but it slipped out of his hand on his backswing and landed in the stream that guards the left side of the green.

The rules of golf state that you have to complete a hole with the same ball you started it with, so Dustin would have been hit with a two-shot penalty if he was unable to locate the sunken sphere.
But Austin, who was wearing a protective cast on his right hand, had no hesitation in jumping into the water - shoes and all - to retrieve the ball, and Dustin went on to par the hole before completing a second straight 70.

Aussie Dodt now three shots clear in Mauritius

Open as McLeary birdies last to make cut

FROM THE EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE
Andrew Dodt extended his lead at the European Tour's AfrAsia Bank Mauritius Open to three shots on another tough day for scoring at Four Seasons Golf Club at Anahita.
The Australian came into the second round with a two-shot advantage after a brilliant opening 66 and added a 70 to move to eight under and establish a cushion over last week's winner Jeunghun Wang.
Blustery conditions at the Ernie Els-designed layout on the Mauritian east coast made any score under par very valuable indeed, and Wang's 70 proved to be one of the best rounds of the morning.
Siddikur Rahman posted a level par 72 to remain four under and he was joined there in the afternoon by Nicolas Colsaerts, who signed for the lowest round of the week so far, a brilliant 65.

The big-hitting Belgian is attached to the Four Seasons and bucked the scoring trend to record nine birdies and two bogeys and sit two shots ahead of England's Ross McGowan, who had a 67.
Wang had briefly moved ahead of Dodt in the morning but when the Australian birdied the seventh to turn in 35, he had a two-shot lead.
Another birdie on the tenth was followed by a chip-in on the 12th and the two-time European Tour winner looked like he was going to run away with it before he went out of bounds off the 13th tee and surrendered a double-bogey seven.
He birdied the 14th but then dropped another shot after finding sand off the tee on the next before hitting the last green in two for a closing birdie.
"You've got to be as tough as you can and miss in the right spots. I didn't strike the ball as well as I did yesterday, but I missed in the right areas, where I could still get up and down. That was the key.
"The chip-in on the 12th was a lovely shot. It came out a little harder than I would've liked but luckily it hit the hole dead centre. I lost my concentration on the next hole, though, which sometimes happens when you make a birdie.
"I've always been a pretty good wind player, so I feel really comfortable in these conditions."
South Korean Wang claimed a maiden European Tour win at the Trophée Hassan II and has brought that form with him to the Indian Ocean.
SCOTSWATCH (by Colin Farquharson).
Jamie McLeary birdied the last hole in a second-round 74 to make the cut right on the limit mark of 150. A total of 73 players with 150 and better made the cut.
They did not include the only other Scot in the field, George Murray from Anstruther, who missed out by one with rounds of 74 and 77 for 151.

Robert Arnott wins Senior PGA title despite double bogey at last hole

REPORT BY LEE McLAUGHLAN, PGA Press Officer

Bishopbriggs' Robert Arnott sailed to victory as he became the third successive Scot to win the Silversea Senior PGA Professional Championship at Foxhills, Surrey today.

The 52-year-old followed in the footsteps of Kenny Hutton (Downfield) and Fraser Mann (Carnoustie Links) as he captured the Bernard Hunt Trophy and cheque for £6,000, which he hailed as ‘the biggest win of his career’.

Starting the day with a two-shot advantage over South Winchester’s Richard Adams, Arnott’s lead was never troubled as the breezy conditions and testing nature of the Bernard Hunt course enabled him to protect his lead.

Having previously chalked up two sub-par rounds in a rain-affected championship, Arnott’s final round of three-over-par 76 was still sufficient for him to ‘fall over the line’ after a double bogey at the last saw him finish the week on one-under-par 217

His round was a mixed affair with four bogeys and three birdies also on his card. But it was sufficient to claim a two-shot victory over defending champion Mann, one of only two players to break par on the final

Arnott, who hadn’t made the cut on his previous two appearances at Foxhills, said: “This has to be the best thing I’ve won. This is a national event and I’ve never won a national event so this has got be up there as number one.

“It feels fantastic. I made it quite hard towards the end. I had a four shot lead coming down the last I thought I’d just plod my way up and was a wee bit careless as I missed from six inches. But I am delighted as I worked hard all day.
“Conditions certainly helped me. I had a couple of shots lead at the start of the day and only two guys are under par so no-one was going to go five or six under in these conditions.”

Defending champion Mann shot a well-crafted final round on two-under 71, which saw only one dropped shot – at the 10th – with three birdies for good measure. It left him at one-over and picking up a cheque for £4,500.

He said: “I played very steady all week. I knew par would be there or thereabouts with the conditions being so difficult. I just had to keep my head down and just keep chipping and putting and just try and stay in contention.

“I had my best round today and just gave myself lots of birdies and chances and made one or two. I know how difficult the course is I would have loved to have shot five or six under but I just did the best I could.

“It gives me satisfaction and makes me go away and try harder next year as I was absolutely exhausted yesterday. My legs were absolutely shot. I need to go away and lose three stone and get back in the gym again.

“It is fantastic for Robert as he’s not been playing much for the past two years. He had his players’ category on the senior tour and hardly played any events and so this is fantastic. If anyone else was going to win it other than me then he’d be number one on the list.”

Mark Stokes of Rayleigh Golf Range completed the top three finishing at two-over for the week after a closing round of 75. It earned him £3,400.
Fraser Mann's brother Lindsay was the third best Scot with a total of 226 and a T16 finish for a payslip of £506.
