US PGA Tour and LPGA announce

 "strategic alliance agreement"

Hard on the heels of the announcement that the R and A and the Ladies Golf Union are to merge, comes surprising news from America.

The US PGA Tour and Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) have announced a "strategic alliance agreement" which could lead to the organisations staging joint events.
Stressing that both parties remain separate and independent, the tours said they would be "exploring the potential development of joint events" and that the written agreement would help with co-ordinating schedules, joint marketing, domestic television and digital media strategies.
The European Tour and Ladies European Tour will stage simultaneous events at the same venue in May, with the men playing the Hassan Trophy on the Red Course at Royal Golf Dar Es Salam in Morocco and the women contesting the Lalla Meryem Cup on the Blue Course.
Sweden's Anders Forsbrand and Helen Alfredsson were the last winners of the Benson and Hedges Trophy, a mixed team event staged from 1988-91.
"We believe the PGA Tour has significant expertise in the areas that we will focus on together and working more closely with them carries with it the very real potential of positively impacting our members, our tournaments and our ability to grow our sport around the world," LPGA commissioner Mike Whan said in a statement.
PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem said: "From our collaboration in bringing golf back as an Olympic sport as joint members of the International Golf Federation to our co-operation in helping to grow the game of golf as part of the World Golf Foundation, our two organisations have had a long history of working together for the common good of our sport.
"Extending our relationship with the LPGA into these new areas is a natural extension of this work and collaboration."

Craig Ross becomes South Africa's fourth

Scottish champion in last six years

FROM THE SGU WEBSITE

Scotland’s love affair with the Sanlam South African men's amateur  championship has continued today when Kirkhill’s Craig Ross claimed the title at George Golf Club.
The Lanarkshire player becomes the fourth Scot in the last six years to win the crown, after defeating up-and-coming home player Dylan Naidoo by 3 and 1 in a high quality, low scoring 36-hole final.
Ross follows last year’s champion, Craigie Hill’s Daniel Young, Brian Soutar (2012) and Michael Stewart (2011) as recent Scottish winners of the prestigious event.
Over 35 holes, Ross was an impressive 13 under par, including an eight under par effort for 17 holes in round two, while teenager Naidoo, who is bound for the University of Arkansas later this year,  was 11 under.
Ross, coached by David Orr, has achieved his biggest win in the amateur ranks, and builds on his victory among the professionals when he won at PGA EuroPro Tour event at Mar Hall in 2014.
The 23-year-old, who qualified for the knock-out phase as second seed behind compatriot Rory Franssen from Inverness, held a two-hole lead at lunch after making birdie on the last three holes. The Scot’s lead had increased to four after 22 holes, before his South African opponent began a spirited comeback.
Naidoo won three holes from the 25th to cut the deficit to just one hole, but Ross – who was five under par in his semi-final victory over Marco Steyn – refused to buckle, and won the 29th before a stunning eagle 2 at the par-4 30th.
The Scotland international player closed the match out with a birdie at the 35th and was six under par for his last seven holes.

Fraser and Piercy lead at Doral with 66s

ASIAN TOUR NEWS RELEASE
Australian Marcus Fraser continued his formidable form when he fired a six-under-par 66 to share the opening honours with Scott Piercy of the United States at the World Golf Championship (WGC)-Cadillac Championship on Thursday.
Fraser, winner of the inaugural Maybank Championship Malaysia last month, nailed seven birdies against a lone bogey to hold a one-shot edge over American superstar Phil Mickelson, who took third on his own at the Trump National Doral.
Reigning Asian Tour number one Anirban Lahiri of India got off to an encouraging start as he signed for a 70 to stay four shots off the pace in tied-11th place while Korea’s K.T. Kim stayed a further shot back in tied-16th at the US$9.5 million event.
Australian Scott Hend and Thai star Kiradech Aphibarnrat were among those bunched in tied-48th after carding matching 75s while Australian Nathan Holman returned with a disappointing 82 at the WGC-Cadillac Championship.
Fraser, who leads the Asian Tour Order of Merit thanks to his win in Malaysia, credited his hot putter for his strong start and is determined to continue his good form for the next three rounds.
“It’s obviously a great way to start, especially in a golf tournament like this and a golf course as strong as this. I’ve obviously got a lot of confidence from today.
"My previous results at Doral haven’t been that great. Nice to get a good one early and hopefully build on that over the next few days,” said Fraser.
Fraser opened with two straight birdies starting from the 10 and added a birdie on 13 to turn in 33. He birdied the first after the turn and sank three straights birdies from the fifth before stumbling with his lone bogey of the day on eighth.
“I felt like I did everything really well. I played really steady and I putted really well again. The greens is perfect out there. There’s not a mark on them, so if you feel like if you read them well and get the ball started on line, it’s a good chance to go in I felt like everything was pretty good today and felt like it was all around, I did a good job,” added the 37-year-old Australian.
Thai veteran Thongchai Jaidee was forced to withdrew from the WGC-Cadillac Championship due to illness.
